They should be regulated monopolies, like most electric and utility companies. Even though most are privately owned, they are heavily regulated because customers don't have a choice who provides service.

Example: there are several electric utilities in my state, but I live in the territory served by only one. It's a monopoly, so the state regulates what the utility can charge me.

Companies like Google, Facebook, Twitter, and Amazon are really monopolies. They should be regulated as such.

You can call it whatever you want, but it's the model for how public utilities are currently regulated and managed in the United States today when there is only one provider available to customers.
