You know how bad you need eye bleach after certain funny but foul pic posts? The bleach doesn't help. You cannot un-know once you become aware. It really could damage most people. Knowing that, I still think everyone (that wants to) needs to know. Recovery is impossible if you aren't even aware of the problem.
