  1. It was Labour’s seat going into the by-election

  2. Turnout was nearly 20 points down from the last General Election

  3. Labour and Conservative both had double-digit falls in share of the vote

  4. Brexit Party was less than 700 votes behind Labour

 

All in all: a good outcome for the Brexit Party in its first Westminster election, but just short of victory.

 

As with all by-elections, turnout is the challenge: low turnout tends to be skewed towards committed voters with firm party allegiances. In a General Election there’s more to play for and there’s far more prospect of upsets occurring.

 

On tonight’s showing, BP could well cause a major upset in the GE if the Cons don’t deliver on Brexit in the post-May remainder of this Parliament.

 

Let’s see whether BP is anything more than a protest vote, though. The jury is still out…
