There's a guy I saw at the Sunday market in Astoria, OR. Makes breathtakingly beautiful knives and the like from hand-forged Damascus steel. Pricey as hell, but each knife has a story–what it was made from, why he made it, how long it took, etc.. The concept of a functional piece of art is one that would be awesome to see make a comeback.
