Blood donation breakthrough sees scientists convert all types to O using gut bacteria

In a breakthrough that could save thousands of lives, scientists have found a way to convert all blood types to the universal type that is safe for all patients to receive, by using microbes found in the human gut.

Researchers from the University of British Columbia have figured out how to convert blood types A, B and AB into the universal Type O, which all patients can receive in a transfusion, regardless of their own blood type.

Blood types are differentiated by the kinds of sugar found on the surface of red blood cells. Type O has no sugars. Scientists had realized that some enzymes can remove the sugars from A, B and AB blood cells, turning them into Type O, but they hadn’t found an enzyme that was safe, efficient and economical, until they considered the gut.

The human digestive tract has the same sugars found on blood cells, and bacterial enzymes found in feces strip the sugars from the lining to aid digestion. The scientists were able to isolate the enzyme and use it to strip blood of its sugars in a more efficient way than any other enzyme.

The scientists made the exciting discovery last August, but have just published the results of their research in the journal Nature Microbiology.

The next step is for the team to test the enzyme conversion in a clinical setting to see if there are any side effects of the procedure. If none are found, the future of blood donation will change for the better.

It is always shocking to read how our Nation's greatest leaders are notoriously involved with the misdeeds of major corporations. The conflict of interest of "protecting" our country teamed up with sitting on the board of major corporations, often leads the USA down the wrong path. It comes as no surprize that making big money comes before protecting our citizens.

Today for the first time I read that Donald Rumsfeld was made the CEO of GD Searle in order to get FDA approval for Aspartame (Nutrasweet). It seems that GD Searle had failed for over a decade in getting FDA approval due to the fact that the substance was so toxic. In fact, aspartame was actually on a Pentagon list of biowarfare chemicals submitted to Congress, which just goes to show you how lethal a chemical it really is.

Even scarier, the doctor that was in charge of the lab to study Aspartame, reported that the substance was too toxic and he mysteriously disappeared and all the paper work somehow was destroyed. He was replaced along with the members of the FDA that disapproved of Aspartame's approval… After Aspartame passed FDA, all these new members were rewarded with huge cash sums. A job well done.

This is further proof that our immune system is under attack by our own government. We are worth more to the system when we are sick. The pharmaceutical industry funds every politician in order to make a friend. They are not republican or democrat… they will fund any and all that run for office. They know that people do not like to "bite the hand that feeds". News companies are mostly funded by drug ads, so of course the evening news does not report on drugs and their side effects until it is too late.

How can we trust Rumsfeld to defend our nation if he is part of a team that is knowingly poisoning our people with chemical warfare? How can we know he is not doing this in many other ways? I have a bad feeling things are really wrong in Washington…

I believe that there is a huge effort right now to control population. There is an agenda to attack our immune systems in order to kill off the weak, sick, and elderly. Anyone unable to work and slave their day away will be slotted for destruction. Issues like CODEX allowing German Pharmaceutical companies to control vitamins, herbs, and supplements worldwide is the next step in removing any way for individuals to maintain their own nutritional needs. CODEX also allows more pesticides and molds into our food and animal feed, making mass production easier for the big companies.

German world domination did not die out with the end of World War II. In fact, I hate to admit it, but I believe that the Nazis actually won the war. They just pretended to lose so that we wouldn't notice them take over our government. This way there would be no civil unrest or attempts for upheaval.

Think about it, the Nazis were conducting all their pharmaceutical research on the poor people in their concentration camps. When the Nuremberg Trials broke up the monopolies of that time, they split into what is today the four leading German Pharmaceutical companies.

Americans drink more soda than anyone else on the planet – well over 700 eight-ounce servings each year, on average, and an increasing amount of it is diet soda.

They might be more reluctant to do so if they knew about the safety questions still surrounding aspartame. A number of scientists responding expressed major concerns about aspartame's safety at the time of its approval, and even more indicated areas where they believed more research is needed on aspartame to resolve their concerns – research on areas such as neurological functions, brain tumors, seizures, headaches, and adverse effects on children and pregnant women.

Grist reports:

"In a 1996 survey, Ralph G. Walton … looked at 166 peer-reviewed studies on aspartame undertaken between 1980 and 1985. He found that all 74 of the studies funded by the industry found no adverse effects from aspartame, while 84 of the 92 independently funded articles did find bad effects."

Aspartame is the ingredient found in NutraSweet, It is also found in Equal, Spoonful, Equal Measure, AminoSweet, Benevia, NutraTaste, Canderel, and many popular "diet" sodas. This chemical is currently on the ingredient list of nearly 6,000 products worldwide. But since it was approved for use as a food additive in 1981, it has been dogged by complaints about its safety.

Huawei teams up with automakers to launch self-driving cars – report

One of the world’s largest telecom companies, Huawei, may launch self-driving vehicles as early as 2021 together with partners in China and beyond, a Huawei representative has revealed to the Financial Times (FT).

The Chinese tech giant is under intense pressure from the US, which has banned American firms from supplying Huawei with components or technology, amid a simmering trade row with Beijing.

Huawei, meanwhile, is apparently looking to move beyond the telecoms industry. The corporation’s chief strategy architect, Dang Wenshuan, said there are plans to supply artificial intelligence technology for a joint project with manufacturers, including Audi and GAC Toyota (a joint venture of Chinese automobile maker GAC Group and Toyota Motor Company). China-based Beijing New Energy Automobile and Changan Automobile are also collaborating with the company.

“From my understanding, we are working together to have a car that will be shipped in the year 2021 or 2022 using these [autonomous driving] components,” Dang said as cited by FT.

The self-driving cars are expected to be launched in China, as Chinese producers are moving “faster” in this sphere, but the vehicles will also be available in Europe, he added.

A prototype of the autonomous car was demonstrated to the FT in Huawei’s headquarters. The demo featured an Audi car driving through the streets of Shanghai. The man behind the wheel did not touch any controls, while the vehicle stopped at the traffic lights and avoided pedestrians.

The project already has competitors in the autonomous driving market given that leading world tech companies, and Chinese ones too, are working on similar projects of their own.

The Cost of Privacy: Facebook's 'Study' App Will Pay to Monitor Users, Track Usage of Rival Apps

Facebook will relaunch its controversial market research app, which was previously known as Onavo, following claims that its app had spied on users, which Facebook denies.

US social media giant Facebook will relaunch its market research app Study, which pays users to learn how they use their data online.

The news comes after a wave of scandals erupted over Facebook’s handling and acquisition of users’ data, most recently after it had paid minors as young as 13 to harvest data on how they had used apps from rival social media companies.

Facebook will launch the service in the US and India, and only on Android, where privacy regulations are less strict than Apple’s iOS.

The app's privacy policy states that all users must consent to the programme’s terms to grant access to parts of the phone.

But Study had been discontinued under its previous name, Onavo, amid concerns from Android users, and will operate as a VPN until Facebook can find a substitute. Cupertino-based Apple banned Facebook’s former market research and virtual private network (VPN) app in January, which had been bought for $120m (£91m) in 2014.

Libyan National Army scores direct hits on enemy positions in Tripoli: video

BEIRUT, LEBANON (8:10 P.M.) – The Libyan National Army (LNA) scored a number of direct hits on the military positions of the Tripoli-backed Government of National Accord (GNA) forces on Sunday.

In a video published shortly after the attack, the Benghazi-based Libyan National Army can be seen bombing the GNA forces in Tripoli, forcing the latter to withdraw from their post.

Since the LNA launched their offensive earlier this year, their forces have managed to advance to the southern gates of Tripoli.

The GNA has formally complained to the U.N. about this advance; however, their pleas have done little to hat the LNA’s offensive.

VAT carousel fraudsters arrested with the support of Eurojust

During a joint action day coordinated by Eurojust, judicial authorities from Italy, Germany, Spain, Austria and Romania took down an organised crime group suspected of large-scale VAT fraud in the EU drinks market. Following numerous house searches in Italy, Germany, Austria and Romania, mobile phones and relevant documents were seized; moreover, bank details and records as well as other criminal assets were identified. 7 suspects residing in Italy, Austria and Romania were arrested, following the execution of pre-trial arrest warrants. The total amount of tax evasion is estimated at almost €2 million. Earlier today, with Eurojust’s support, 18 people, involved in another VAT fraud with alcoholic drinks, were arrested.

Eurojust, the EU’s Judicial Cooperation Unit, actively coordinated and supported the national authorities throughout the investigations, which culminated in the successful action day. Eurojust swiftly set up a coordination centre, which allowed for real-time exchange of information and facilitated the smooth execution of European Arrest Warrants and European Investigation Orders.

Victims of sexual abuse saved through Eurojust’s intervention

With the active support of Eurojust, the Italian and Romanian national authorities brought down an organised crime group involved in trafficking in human beings for sexual exploitation. In a joint action day, coordinated by Eurojust, 8 suspects were placed under preventive measures, 18 house searches were carried out and more than €70 000 in assets and cash were seized. Another three people were deported to Romania. It was the first time that two National Members at Eurojust submitted to the Italian and Romanian competent authorities a formal Joint Request that triggered the initiation of an investigation and the setting up of a joint investigation team.

The members of the organised crime group (OCG), mainly composed of Romanian nationals, coerced women and minors into prostitution, initially in the Romanian Pascani district and at a later stage, in the area of Bergamo in Italy. The victims typically stemmed from poor rural areas and precarious family backgrounds, and had a low level of education. The OCG members promised to the victims lawful jobs and a better future in Italy and occasionally recruited them via job centres. The victims were forced to pay to the criminals €100 per day, and an additional amount for accommodation and transportation The OCG members are suspected of having committed the crime of trafficking in human beings (THB) with the purpose of enslavement, prostitution and sexual exploitation.

BoE officials say central bank still on course for a hike

The Bank of England is still on course for a rate hike as its next policy move, though the prospect of a turbulent Brexit in October could still sharply change the outlook.

Egypt seized $178m from money laundering, MOI claim

The counter narcotics and organised crime sector of the Egyptian Ministry of Interior has announced the seizure of 3.4 billion Egyptian pounds ($178 million) from money laundering crimes through drug trafficking over the course of a year.

Though the seizure may appear to be a victory for authorities, human rights observers have, in the past, pointed to a number of cases in which accusations of money laundering have been politically motivated.

In October 2016 military general turned President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi came under fire when he appointed his brother as head of a government body to combat terrorist financing and money laundering, which exercised control over bank accounts of individuals or companies suspected of money laundering or supporting terrorism. The new unit was granted power to access bank accounts, freeze them and seize funds.

Al-Sisi’s brother, Ahmed Saeed Hussain Khalil, is a senior judge and was at the time deputy head of the Court of Cassation, which raised serious questions over nepotism and the independence of the judiciary, given their family connection.

Moldova to move embassy to Jerusalem

Moldova has announced that it will move its embassy in Israel from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, a move which would make it the first European country to do so.

The announcement comes against the backdrop of a political crisis in Moldova, a small Eastern European country located between Romania and Ukraine.

The country has been engaged in a power struggle between three parties – the pro-European Union ACUM bloc; the Socialists led by Moldovan President Igor Dodon and backed by Russia; and the Democratic Party run by media tycoon Vladimir Plahotniuc – since it held elections in February.

After months of post-election deadlock, ACUM and the Socialist party agreed to form a government – a move not recognised by the Democratic Party which insists that the previous prime minister, Pavel Filip, remains in charge.

On Sunday, the Democratic Party persuaded the country’s Constitutional Court to briefly suspend President Dodon and install Filip as president for enough time to allow him to issue a decree calling for snap elections in September, US-based magazine Algemeiner explains. While acting as president, Filip announced that Moldova would move its embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem.

Tariffs are forcing Big Tech to move production out of China

Though China previously warned against cooperating with US trade restrictions.

In response to the Trump administration's trade war with China, major tech companies are preparing to relocate key manufacturing operations. According to Bloomberg, Google is moving production of its US-bound Nest thermostats and motherboards to Taiwan. The Wall Street Journal reports that Nintendo is shifting at least some production of its Switch console to Southeast Asia. At the same time, China has allegedly warned companies that they will face permanent consequences if they cooperate with Trump administration trade restrictions.

Last month, the US increased import tariffs on certain Chinese goods from 10 percent to 25 percent. If the tariff hike goes through, items like motherboards, smartphones, video game consoles and computers could be subject to the 25 percent tax. At that rate, Nintendo might be forced to sell its consoles at a loss in the US.

Some companies are better prepared than others to shift out of China if necessary. Apple Inc. partner Foxconn Technology Group said it would be able to manufacture all US-bound iPhones outside of China if it were forced to do so. Wistron Corp., a company that makes servers for Facebook and Microsoft, is reportedly looking to shift some production away from China, though it hasn't shared specifics.

The U.S.-China trade debacle has escalated since U.S. President Donald Trump has lifted tariffs from 10% to 25% on $200 billion worth of Chinese imports. China struck back with tariff hikes on $60 billion worth of U.S. goods.

While the toy industry has so far been guarded from trade hostilities, the days ahead may not be as unchallenging, believes the Toy Association. This is because about 3 billion toys are sold in the United States each year, with 85% of those coming from China. In fact, per the U.S. International Trade Commission, toys, puzzles and more were among the major commodities imported from China in 2018.

JPMorgan Chase Could Face Fourth Felony Count for Rigging Precious Metals Markets

JPMorgan’s reputation is so soiled for market rigging offences that two trail attorneys have written a book comparing the bank to the Gambino crime family.

On September 25, 2013, after spending five years and 7,000 hours using taxpayers’ money investigating the potential rigging of the silver market, the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) concluded that “there is not a viable basis to bring an enforcement action with respect to any firm or its employees related to our investigation of silver markets.” The investigation was provoked by multiple complaints asserting the market was rigged.

The CFTC is a Federal regulator that oversees the U.S. commodities markets. The U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) is also a Federal agency and the only one that can bring a criminal case against firms and individuals who commit conspiracy and fraud in commodity and securities markets. (The Securities and Exchange Commission can bring only civil, not criminal, cases.)

On October 9 of last year, the DOJ used its criminal powers and charged John Edmonds, a former long-time employee of JPMorgan Chase, with one count of commodities fraud and one count of conspiracy to commit wire fraud, commodities fraud, commodities price manipulation and spoofing.

The charges covered the period in which the CFTC had found no “viable basis to bring an enforcement action” for silver market manipulation.

Edmonds has pleaded guilty to the charges and admitted that “from approximately 2009 through 2015, he conspired with other precious metals traders at the Bank to manipulate the markets for gold, silver, platinum and palladium futures contracts traded on the New York Mercantile Exchange Inc. (NYMEX) and Commodity Exchange Inc. (COMEX)….”

The Dark Side to China's Smart Cities: Everyone's Being Watched

Earlier this year, a U.S. congressional committee commissioned a report on China’s development of “smart cities,” with a particular focus on whether they were smarter than their American counterparts.

The U.S.-China Economic and Security Review Commission’s (USCC) request for submissions was revealing because it showed that, despite the hype, not much is known about the fruits of China’s efforts to build such cities. Smart cities are highly digitally connected and use the latest technology to manage services.

About 500 of the roughly 1,000 smart cities being built worldwide are in China, according to Chinese state media, government figures and estimates from Deloitte. Under a five-year plan to the end of 2020, the Chinese government expects $74 billion of public and private investment in these cities.

Yet while scattered futuristic pilot examples can be found — from intelligent lighting and power grids to smart traffic management — there is little evidence that this grand vision is dramatically improving the lives of the masses.
