Maybe one of their goals getting everyone into social media was to change the way people subconsciously react to information and opinion. So that people cannot think rationally and are more easily programmed by "news".

When seeing a claim or accusation, a healthy thought process is like "Is this important enough to spend time on? Who is making the claim, and who else is promoting it? What is their credibility? What might their motives be? What evidence was given and is it verifiable? What other information do I have that supports or contradicts the claim? Where can I find more facts before I come to a conclusion?"

A programmed thought process is like "This is important right now because I am seeing it right now. I have strong feelings about topics like this. I like the tone and appearance of the messenger. If this is true it would be consistent with other things I believe. How would I feel about the claim being true? I should express myself about this because I stand for something and my opinion is important. What should I do to show other people like me that I am concerned about this?"
