Roseann - Lots of sick puppies making lots of noise out there. Please stop beating yourself up - their "game" is to CONTROL. They are insisting you accept their insanity and rudeness; by NOT VALUING your empathy and apology they are using that as control over you, causing pain. You do not have to apologize for anything - just walk away (giving whatever gesture you feel like!)
