During the reign of King Herod a jewish subsect were called the The Sadducees, who were closely associated with priestly responsibilities in the Temple.
At some point they opposed Herod because he replaced their high priests with outsiders from Babylonia and Alexandria, in an effort to gain support from the Jewish Diaspora

A “brood of vipers” is a “family of snakes.” Because vipers are venomous, John was essentially calling the religious leaders “deadly sons of serpents.” It’s quite a bold denunciation—and one Jesus repeated to the Pharisees in Matthew 12:34.

Karaites take the Torah literally (salafists), and disregard the jewish traditions. Orthodox jewish people don't see them as jewish people.
A further story bolstering this version of Karaite history was that around the year 750 CE, the Karaites tried to convert the Khazars to Karaite Judaism.
