Mexican president selling his ‘luxurious presidential plane’ to pay for US immigration deal

Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador said he plans to pay for the U.S.-Mexico immigration deal by selling his presidential plane.

“About how much this plan is going to cost, let me say, we have the budget,” López Obrador said at a Wednesday press conference with Mexican Foreign Minister Marcelo Ebrard. “It would come out of what we’re going to receive from the sale of the luxurious presidential plane.”

The Mexican president said he expects the plane to sell for at least $150 million and that the country would also sell off other airplanes to pay for the deal.

The Mexican president’s announcement comes after Trump said Tuesday that he would let Mexico be the ones to release the details of the new immigration deal.

"You would freeze-action it, you would stop it, you would analyze it," Trump said, refusing to release the deal. "I'm going to let Mexico do the announcement at the right time."

Ebrard said at the press conference that his country had started its deployment of 6,000 National Guard troops to Mexico’s southern border shared with Guatemala.

“Starting from today, and in the coming days, the deployment is going to progress rapidly,” Ebrard said.

The deal struck Friday means Mexico will not face the 5% tariffs on goods imported to the U.S. that Trump had promised to impose if the country did not deal with illegal immigration.

Ebrard said that the agreement included a 45-day timeline to show they were doing more to police illegal immigration.

“A lot of things have to happen in 45 days,” Ebrard said. “We are going to do what we said we are going to do.”

Mexico is planning on releasing more details Friday of how they plan to enforce the deal.

Oberlin College to Jury: We’re cash poor and big punitive award to Gibson’s Bakery will hurt students

The witness testimony completed today in the punitive damages hearing, which follows the $11.2 million compensatory verdict last Friday in the lawsuit Gibson’s Bakery v. Oberlin College. The jury could award up to double damages, meaning $22.4 million on top of the $11.2 million, bringing the potential total to $33.6 million, plus a recommendation that the judge award attorney’s fees.

The college has more than $1 billion in funds and net assets according to the latest IRS 990 form, an endowment fund that had grown from $440 million to $887 million in the last 20 years, and because of its non-profit status, pays no taxes on any property it owns.

It also had 18 members of their administration making more than $100,00 a year. The president and chief financial officer of the school were both making more than $500,000 a year.

The final closing arguments will be done tomorrow (Thursday) morning, and the jury should go back to their contemplation room by lunch. The punitive damage verdict should be decided by afternoon.

New York State Assembly passes bill allowing illegal immigrants to obtain driver's licenses

The New York State Assembly passed a bill Wednesday that would allow illegal immigrants to obtain driver's licenses.

Passing the lower chamber of the New York State Legislature with a vote of 86-47, the bill needs only to pass the New York State Senate before heading to the desk of Gov. Andrew Cuomo, who has expressed his readiness to sign it.

The law would allow residents to use passports from other countries and other foreign-issued documents to prove their identities at the Department of Motor Vehicles.

The state's Association of County Clerks is opposed to the law, arguing that its members will not always be able to identify whether foreign documents are genuine.
