Hard Time: Stanford Sailing Coach Gets One Day In Jail For Role In College Admissions Scandal
In an interview with the Wall Street Journal yesterday – ahead of today’s sentencing – Stanford University head sailing coach John Vandemoer called his role in the college admissions cheating scandal, “the biggest mistake of his life.”
Having pleaded guilty – admitting to taking bribes from Mr. Singer (the college scandal’s mastermind) for Stanford’s sailing program in exchange for flagging some of the college counselor’s clients as recruited athletes, even though they weren’t competitive sailors, and therefore giving them a boost in the admissions process – Vandemoer claims that while he understands now the illegality of the arrangements, he didn’t stop to think at the time about whether what he was doing was wrong.
However, as The Wall Street Journal reports, when pressed by the judge in his plea hearing in March, Mr. Vandemoer admitted to knowing that what he was doing was wrong at the time.
But, despite his plea and admission to knowing he did wrong, Mr. Vandemoer was sentenced Wednesday to one day in prison, followed by six months home confinement with electronic monitoring.
In total, he faces two years of supervised release and must pay a $10,000 fine. Prosecutors had asked for 13 months in prison and one year of supervised release.
U.S. District Judge Rya Zobel said she was moved to impose a softer sentence than what the government recommended because of Mr. Vandemoer’s unique position in the case – having not pocketed money for himself.
“I have no doubt that he knew what he was doing was probably wrong,” Judge Zobel said. However, she added, there was general agreement he was “probably the least culpable” of all the coaches in the case.
Mr. Vandemoer said he saw himself as bringing in donations, not taking bribes.
However, federal prosecutors, in their sentencing memo, said Mr. Vandemoer benefited because by getting money for his team, he enhanced his career standing.
“His actions not only deceived and defrauded the university that employed him, but also validated a national cynicism over college admissions by helping wealthy and unscrupulous applicants enjoy an unjust advantage,” they said.
Mr. Vandemoer is one of 50 people, including nine coaches, charged in a vast college admissions scam that became public in March.

Sure they are, and the sky is falling too.
Based on rhetoric, you’d think the United States government was now stealthily undermined by Russians. With never-ending allegations of Russian interference/collusion and even the absurd implication that the duly elected president might be a Russian agent, along with all the other continual anti-Russia references these days, the Red Scare is again alive and well.
But unlike the comedic The Russians are coming! The Russians are coming! movie of 1966 in which a Russian submarine innocently gets caught on a sandbank off our coast, the threat is real – but it’s not the Russians who are the threat.
The irony of this latest fear tactic suggesting a Russian is hiding behind every tree is that the very people touting it with feigned outrage are the ones who are the actual threat. While pointing fingers at all but themselves, those of such ilk seek to increase the leftist/socialist/Marxist agenda in this country.
The time of a conservative alleging widespread subversion/infiltration, as U.S. Senator Joseph McCarthy did, is gone. These days, those with the loud voices screaming about Russians are the leftists themselves. No matter that the Mueller Report determined that no American committed any crime in collusion with Russia, they’re going to ride the same narrative for the next 16 months.
Of course, there shouldn’t be collusion between candidates/political parties and foreign powers, and based on Mueller’s report there wasn’t any. But why should I care about Russian meddling anyway?
At a time when American politicians are proposing the crazy “Green New Deal,” reparations for descendants of slaves, abortion/infanticide, advocating the elimination of the constitutional electoral college, gun control, Supreme Court expansion, making promises of higher taxes, guaranteed incomes, Medicare for all, and free college, Russian meddling is the least of my concerns. Such liberal “progress” is characteristic of the development of a totalitarian society. Leftists stand for such “progress,” while clamoring for more investigation of Russia this-and-that nonsense.
If you think Russian propaganda on social media is concerning, your priorities are out of order. No Russian has ever marked my ballot, and no Russian ad could sway my political views, much less persuade me to vote for a candidate I fundamentally reject. Any foreign propaganda is no different than good ole American partisan propaganda — maybe it could be filled with hype, exaggerations, distortions, or maybe it could be filled with some actual facts. The case is the same, it’s just political propaganda.

Denver council member wins with promise to impose communism ‘by any means necessary’
Candi CdeBaca won a runoff race last week against former Denver city council president Albus Brooks, and she did it by promising to implement communist policies “by any means necessary.”
CdeBaca was among three candidates that unseated incumbents in the Tuesday runoff, preliminary results show, and she’s already drawing comparisons to Socialist Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, the 29-year-old who unseated 10-term incumbent Joe Crowley in New York’s 14th congressional district in 2018.
“It’s historic,” said Carlos Valverde, state director for Colorado Working Families, a political activist group that supported CdeBaca. “It is in the vein of Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. … A victory that really demonstrates people power over money power.”
CdeBaca defeated Brooks 52.4 percent to 47.6 percent, though military and overseas ballots are still being counted.
The upset victory, and two other incumbent defeats, marks the most significant shift in city leadership in over 30 years, and Valverde contends it “began a movement” toward more progressive policies once the new members are sworn in this week, The Denver Channel reports.
CdeBaca thanked her supporters on Facebook, where she claimed her secret to success was simply keeping it “real.”
“The Eastside taught me really early what ‘real’ really means. Don’t talk about it, BE about it. I knew in my heart if community who knew this principle still existed in the Eastside, they would see me and recognize real,” she wrote. “If they didn’t I was cool with it too because I wanted to serve those who understand this principle. They are here, they showed up, they recognized real.”
In April, Jonathan Woodley posted a video of CdeBaca during a “Denver Decides” candidate forum as she explained to voters exactly what she’s all about, and why she plans to implement communism at every opportunity.
“I don’t believe our current economic system actually works. Um, capitalism by design is extractive and in order to generate profit in a capitalist system, something has to be exploited, that’s land, labor or resources,” CdeBaca alleged.
“And I think that we’re in late phase capitalism and we know it doesn’t work and we have to move into something new, and I believe in community ownership of land, labor, resources and distribution of those resources,” she continued. “And whatever that morphs into is I think what will serve community the best and I’m excited to usher it in by any means necessary.”
By Any Means Necessary also happens to be a radical “anti-fascist” group known for instigating violent confrontations with Trump supporters and patriots across the country, including the deadly melee at a Unite the Right rally in Charlottesville, Virginia in 2017.
The Cambridge Dictionary defines communism as “an economic system based on public ownership of property and control of the methods of production, and in which no person profits from the work of others.”
It’s a natural progression of socialism, which is becoming increasingly fashionable in American politics.
A Harris poll conducted for Axios on HBO published Sunday found 55 percent of American women between the ages of 18 and 54 would prefer to live in a socialist country like Venezuela than the U.S. More broadly, the four in 10 Americans said the same.
