Modern torpedoes dive under a ship so the detonation severs the keel. The only ones left out there that go for the sides are the WW2 vintage Mk 8s. KOKURA COURAGEOUS is reported to be damaged above the waterline. Only torpedoes that can fly are ASROCs and they are strictly anti-sub ordnance.
