I’ve got it! The older guy on the right is forming a number 6 with his body. His pen indicates “straight up”, so he is 6:00 and no seconds. We know he is the start time because he is placing a drop into the “time machine.”
Now try to follow with me. The guy on the left is holding the jar which signifies a complete measurement of time, in this case, one hour. He has already gathered 3 complete jars(hours). But he is in the process of completing another. Since he is holding the new jar, (applying his hands to the jar= adding to the jar). His right hand applied, which has two fingers crossed means that hand adds 4 and his left hand shows 5 applied, meaning 45.
So we are adding 3 jars, and 45 minutes(of the new jar) for a 3hr and 45min. delta.
3:45 get it?
And you all know what that means.
