Google and Facebook have a new argument against calls to break up the technology giants: We need to be big to beat China.

Google’s chief executive officer, Sundar Pichai, made the pitch in a recent CNN interview.

“When we look at it globally, our tech companies are going to contribute to our economic growth in an important way. And we compete against other countries, other companies,” he said.

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg has made this point more clearly, arguing that breaking up the social media company would simply clear the way for Chinese tech companies, which do not share American values, to step in and dominate.

90 percent of Iran’s petrochemical industry controlled by Khamenei, IRGC

Iran, June 14, 2019 - Following U.S. sanctions against the Iranian regime’s largest and most profitable petrochemical companies for their connections with the Revolutionary Guards (IRGC), al-Hayat daily cited revelations made by the Iranian opposition coalition National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI).

“Petrochemical industry serving IRGC terrorism and Iranian intelligence” is the title of a June 9 al-Hayat article citing NCRI revelations. The Ministry of Intelligence and Security (MOIS) is the mullahs’ main intel/spying apparatus.

“The NCRI, long calling for a full oil and arms embargo on Iran, says Tehran relies on profits from its oil and petrochemical product sales to financially fuel its terrorism and warmongering. The petrochemical branch consists of numerous companies working to provide the regime’s annual budget. The large majority of the petrochemical industry is under the control of Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei and the Revolutionary Guards (IRGC). Various petrochemical experts inside Iran are estimating that 90 percent of the petrochemical industry is controlled by Khamenei himself.

The "Setad Ejraiye Farmane Hazrate Emam" – Headquarters for Executing the Order of the Imam – is active under Khamenei’s direct supervision. From 1999 forward, [Iran] established a firm by the name of the Tadbir Economic Development Group, consisting of a large number of petrochemical companies and has control over a large portion of Iran’s petrochemical industry.

The Persian Gulf Petrochemical Company is known as Iran’s largest petrochemical complex and the most profitable. This company is in charge of providing the funding necessary to the IRGC’s financial arm, known as Fort Khatam. This is the largest IRGC financial institution.

Adobe trains AI to detect Photoshop-edited images

SAN FRANCISCO: Adobe, along with researchers from the University of California, Berkeley, have trained Artificial Intelligence (AI) to detect facial manipulation in images edited using the Photoshop software.

"This new research is part of a broader effort across Adobe to better detect image, video, audio and document manipulations," the company wrote in a blog-post on Friday.

As part of the programme, the team trained a convolutional neural network (CNN) to spot changes in images made with Photoshop's "Face Away Liquify" feature, which was intentionally designed to change facial features like eyes and mouth.

On testing, it was found that while human eyes were able to judge the altered face 53 per cent of the time, the the trained neural network tool achieved results as high as 99 per cent.

REPORT: Taxpayers Paid $127,000 In Legal Bills for Judge Accused of Helping Criminal Illegal Evade ICE

A new report by the Boston Herald says Judge Shelley M. Richmond Joseph has had $127,000 in legal fees paid by taxpayers.

This comes on the heels of a request by Joseph’s lawyers to enter a not guilty plea and to restore her pay:

Joseph, who has pleaded not guilty to charges, has an annual salary of $181,328.

In a motion to reconsider filed Thursday, first reported by the Boston Globe, her attorneys Michael Keating and David Kluft ask that Joseph’s suspension be with pay. They argue withholding her salary runs counter to the presumption of Joseph’s innocence and undermines the court’s stated position about not offering an opinion on the case.

Turkish police have arrested 20 members of an international migrant-smuggling organisation, including one of Europe's most wanted traffickers, Turkish police have said.

Akbar Omar Tawfeeq, the suspected leader of the crime syndicate, and others were captured on May 25 during a joint operation conducted by police and intelligence agencies, officials said in a news briefing in Istanbul on Wednesday.

At least 569 migrants were caught and judicial authorities confiscated six vehicles, six boats and numerous life vests belonging to Tawfeeq's organisation, police officials said.

The Department of Education has launched an investigation into foreign cash secretly flowing into U.S. universities and sent letters to Georgetown University and Texas A&M Thursday.

A Senate report found that 70 percent of colleges that took money from a Chinese propaganda program broke the law by not disclosing it.

Almost all of the colleges contracted to shape U.S. textbooks on the Middle East received massive funding from countries in the region.

The Department of Education is going after U.S universities over supposed ties to foreign governments, after some allegedly took huge quantities of foreign cash and hid it from regulators.

At the top of the list are Georgetown University and Texas A&M, which have taken hundreds of millions of dollars from the government of Qatar, a middle eastern nation with suspected links to international terrorism.
