Need of rabbit hole help…. ALASKA

Thx to Clown that picture showing a key hole I started digging on Keystone Canyon, Alaska. The importance of this area is HUGE. The pass was the doorway to the interior of Alaska from Valdez on Prince William Sound. It is known as the Grand Canyon of Alaska because the walls are steep cliffs. The original trail through the canyon was called the Goat Trail. In the late 1800s early 1900s the military cleared a trail through the pass making it more accessible. Followed up by a telegraph wire and eventually a pipeline. Richardson Highway was built through the Canyon leading to Delta Junction. So what is up there? Alan Army Base and POGO gold mine. The Army base was built after WW2. It was vital for Cold War.

POGO mine is huge! Ownership of the mine is very interesting.

It was owned by Northstar Mining out of Australia

Which is part of Phillip's Petroleum

Then it was owned by Sumitomo

In 2014 the acquisition took place. January 27th. It is also the year they expanded the mine in a $17 million dollar investment. Well what happened in January 2014?

A D5 Avalanche smothered the pass at Keystone Canyon!

Why did they want to close off all transportation on Richardson hwy? That answer I have yet to find.

Will compile all sauce in one dump shortly
