>Mr Le Mesurier, 48, is understood to have fallen from a balcony in the early hours of Monday morning. While the exact circumstances of his death remain unclear, Turkish security officials said it was being treated as a suspected suicide.

>But Mr Le Mesurier also became the target of an intensive disinformation campaign by the Kremlin, which accused him of being a British intelligence agent and a supporter of al-Qaeda for his work with the White Helmets.

>As recently as last week, the Russian foreign ministry ministry called him “a former agent of Britain’s MI6” with “connections to terrorist groups”. Within hours of his death, pro-Assad social media users were calling him “a British mercenary”.

>Hamish de Bretton-Gordon, a former army British officer, served with Mr Le Mesurier in the military and later worked with him on advising humanitarian NGOs in Syria. He saw him in Istanbul last month and said he seemed in “good heart”.
