This really, really bothers me. This bridge is VERY similar in construction to Novy Most ("New Bridge") in Bratislava. The mast carries the main vertical loads. Both ends are essentially "floating". I thought the abutments looked undersized until I saw anon's photo.

 

IMHO, something other than a heavy object dropping on it happened to have it pancake on the roadway.

 

I've been ON Novy Most many times. I'm related to engineers who are colleagues of those who designed it. I'm related to a lot of engineers.

 

I suspect fuckery.

This makes me unhappy.

 

And NO, I am NOT a structural guy. I harrass electrons.

The mast that carries the vertical loads is not to be seen in any of the pictures in the "accident" photos.

 

Either the bride was redesigned to not need it or somebody seriously fucked up by allowing traffic underneath before it was properly supported.

 

Looking at one end, it came of the abutment.
