A prominent U-S Senator said that Swiss banks have jeopardised hopes for the resolution of Holocaust victims' financial claims. Senator Alfonse D'Amato denounced the final offer of 600 (m) million dollars as an arbitrary, high-handed settlement offer. He said it did not begin to rectify the damage or injustice done to Jewish victims of Nazi oppression. New York Senator Alfonse D'Amato condemned a settlement offer by Swiss banks to Holocaust victims on Monday. Three Swiss banks proposed compensation of 600 (m)million dollars to Holocaust survivors for deposits banks failed to return to them after World War Two. News of the amount โ€“ supposedly protected by a confidentiality clause โ€“ leaked out on Friday. D'Amato accused the banks of trying to dictate the amount in a take it or leave it bargaining strategy.
