In celebration of 10 years, Heidelberg University’s Patricia Adams Lecture Series will welcome former First Lady Laura Bush and daughter, Barbara Pierce Bush.
Oct. 2 is to be the first and only PALS event for the university.
“We are tremendously excited that Mrs. Bush and Barbara have agreed to help us celebrate the 10th anniversary of PALS,” Susan McCafferty, chair of the Patricia Adams Lecture Series Selection Committee, said.
Laura served as First Lady of the United States during the years of 2001-09 when her husband, President George W. Bush, was president. She advocated for issues in education, healthcare and human rights. She also traveled to over 76 countries, including two solo trips to Afghanistan.
Laura is the author of the bestselling memoir “Spoken From The Heart,” and children’s book “Our Great Big Backyard.” She has founded the Texas Book Festival and National Book Festival in Washington, D.C.
Laura is the chair of the Woman’s Initiative at the George W. Bush Institute. She has earned a degree in education and master’s degree in library science and has taught in public schools in Dallas, Houston and Austin.
In 1977, she married George W. Bush, and they have twin daughters. Barbara and Jenna.
Barbara is the co-founder and board chair of Global Health Corps., a community of young leaders who work to build the movement for health equity. Since the time of its establishment the GHS has placed nearly 1,000 young leaders on the front lines of health equity
in Burundi, Uganda, Tanzania, Malawi, Rwanda, Zmbia and the United States.
Barbara has worked in educational programming at the Smithsonian Institution’s Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum and previously worked for Red Cross Children’s Hospital in Capetown, South Africa. She interned for UNICEF in Botswana and is a member of the UNICEF Next Generation Steering Committee. She also has traveled with the U.N. World Food Programme.
Barbara is co-author of the New York Times best seller, “Sisters First,” with sister Jenna Hager.
Barbara has a degree in humanities from Yale University.
During their visit to campus, Laura and Barbara, plan to participate in moderated conversations for Heidelberg students, and then attend the PALS dinner and serve as the event’s keynote speakers.
RSVP is required for all activities and seating is limited.
“Both of them, through their work during and after their time in the White House, embody what we envision for our students, and that is living a life of purpose with distinction,” McCafferty said.
