Minimum wage increases in major liberal cities in the last few years have resulted in net decreases in take-home pay for workers in most industries, especially foodservice. Increased minimum wages lead to reduced hours or outright slashed positions. Especially in foodservice, profit margins are razor thin and mandating higher wages forces owners to employ fewer people and give them fewer hours, resulting in reduced quality of service and higher prices for customers.
It is a fucking failure.
Increasing the minimum wage is a short-sighted and ignorant move by politicians looking to cater to gib-me-dats constituents who are even more retarded at economics than said politicians. It's like giving your kids candy in lieu of a balanced diet. They get a sugar rush in the immediate moment, but they quickly crash and their health suffers in the long term.
It's like removing the bottom rungs from a ladder and expecting everyone to be able to climb it. Unskilled workers whose efforts cannot create $15 worth of value in an hour will never get hired at $15\hr; owners will be forced to take other, potentially more drastic measures instead, like replacing workers with kiosks, forcing skilled workers to cover responsibilities typically covered by unskilled, low-paid workers, slashing benefits, slashing hours, raising prices, cutting costs at the expense of customer satisfaction, and worse.
