Report: Google Maps hosts ‘millions’ of fake business listings

Many of us rely on Google Maps to find electricians, hair salon, and other services in our area. Yesterday, the Wall Street Journal reported that Google Maps hosts an estimated ’11 million falsely listed businesses on any given day.’

The majority of the bogus listings are found in categories that Google calls ‘duress verticals’ – electricians, plumbers, and towing and car repair services. The WSJ noted that scammers often hijack the names of legit businesses through these listings, carry out shoddy jobs, and demand exorbitant fees.

Millions of pigs culled as swine fever spreads through Asia

HANOI: Millions of pigs have been culled in China and Vietnam as a UN food agency urges Asian governments to make containing virulent African swine fever their top priority.

With an announcement by the UN Food and Agricultural Organization that infections have spread to Laos, some experts are saying it is the largest animal disease outbreak in history.

The FAO said in a report late Thursday that more than 3.7 million pigs in the region had been culled since the outbreak began in China last August. Vietnam has been the hardest hit, culling at least 2.6 million pigs followed by China, which reported more than 1.1 million. All the figures were provided to the FAO by governments of countries affected by the epidemic.

More small US banks will now be eligible for “streamlined reporting”, the Federal Reserve and other regulators announced on 17 June.

The decision was announced in a joint statement by the Fed, the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation and the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency. The move is the latest step in reducing US financial regulation prompted by legislative changes passed by Republican lawmakers in May last year.

However, since their entry into the Syrian War, there have been constant rumors about their whereabouts and their activities.

Outgoing Belgian Prime Minister Charles Michel was mentioned on Thursday in European circles as a potential successor to Poland’s Donald Tusk at the helm of the European Council.

Oregon Republican senator threatens state troopers, warns them to ‘come heavily armed’

Tensions were already smoldering in the Oregon Senate Wednesday, when Sen. Brian Boquist, R-Dallas, poured gasoline on the situation, suggesting he would shoot and potentially kill any state trooper sent to haul him unwillingly back to the Capitol.

After Senate Republican Leader Herman Baertschiger Jr. said Tuesday that his caucus was “prepared to take actions” to prevent passage of a major climate change bill, Gov. Brown announced on Wednesday that she was ready to answer Republican stonewalling by calling lawmakers back for a special session.

Brown hinted that she would be willing to send state troopers to round up Republicans if they walk out in the final days of the regular legislative session, saying in a statement that she is “in close communication with Oregon State Police.” That’s an option Democratic senators and the governor did not use earlier this year, when Senate Republicans first brought the Senate to a standstill by walking out and preventing the necessary quorum.

The governor’s hint that she would consider sending troopers in the event of a second walkout triggered an aggressive response from Boquist, which was captured by a KGW news team at the Capitol.

“This is what I told the superintendent,” Boquist said, referring to OSP Superintendent Travis Hampton. “Send bachelors and come heavily armed. I’m not going to be a political prisoner in the state of Oregon. It’s just that simple.”

A federal jury in Boston found the chairman and CEO of an investment firm and a member of the investment firm’s board of directors guilty today for their participation in a scheme to bribe officials of the Republic of Haiti in exchange for business advantages for the investment firm.

Assistant Attorney General Brian A. Benczkowski of the Justice Department’s Criminal Division, U.S. Attorney Andrew Lelling of the District of Massachusetts and Special Agent in Charge Joseph R. Bonavolonta of the FBI’s Boston Field Office made the announcement.

Roger Richard Boncy, 74, a dual U.S. and Haitian citizen who resides in Madrid, Spain, and Joseph Baptiste, DDS, 66, of Fulton, Maryland, were found guilty after a two-week jury trial before U.S. District Judge Allison D. Burroughs of the District of Massachusetts of one count of conspiracy to violate the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act (FCPA) and the Travel Act. Baptiste was also convicted of one count of violating the Travel Act and one count of conspiracy to commit money laundering. Boncy and Baptiste are scheduled to be sentenced by Judge Burroughs on Sept. 12, 2019.

“Richard Boncy and Joe Baptiste conspired to pay millions of dollars in bribes to Haitian officials to do business there,” said Assistant Attorney General Benczkowski. “Today’s guilty verdict sends a strong message that those who use corrupt means to obtain unfair and illegal business advantages will be prosecuted to the fullest extent possible by the Department of Justice.”

“Bribery of public officials corrodes public trust and victimizes the public these officials are supposed to serve,” said U.S. Attorney Andrew E. Lelling. “We will continue to target Americans who try to bribe foreign public officials for business advantage.”

Douglas Sharp, D.O., 69, of Katy, Texas, the medical director of Verimed Health and Medical Wellness Clinic Inc. (Verimed); Innad Husaini, M.D., 64, of Sugar Land, Texas, the owner and operator of Verimed; and Hanh Hong Thi Nguyen, 43, of Houston, the former operator of Verimed, were each charged in an indictment filed in the Southern District of Texas. Sharp, Husaini and Nguyen were each charged with one count of conspiracy to commit health care fraud. In addition, Sharp was charged with three counts of false statements relating to health care matters, Husaini was charged with three counts of health care fraud and Nguyen was charged with two counts of health care fraud. The three defendants were arrested this morning and appeared this afternoon before U.S. Magistrate Judge Peter Bray of the Southern District of Texas. A trial date has not yet been set.
