Before and for a while after WW 2 these were places where young people away from home in the big cities could live in a wholesome Christian environment.
By the late sixties the Y had become a notorious gay trysting place.By the 1970, when the village people relased the song YMCA it advertised what was an accomplished fact. YM and YWCA had been capture and turned against the value they had been created to protect.
