Great game in Arctic: US eyes military port to counter Russia & China at North Pole
US lawmakers want its military to challenge Russia and China on the high seas by finding one or more locations for a port that would help feed Washington’s growing appetite for Arctic oil and other natural riches.
The National Defense Authorization Act 2020 (NDAA) suggests that the Coast Guard and other branches of the US military should identify and designate a new strategic port in the Arctic. It openly states that the move is meant to counter Russia’s presence in the polar region.
Naturally, the bill – which will be voted on next week – stokes fears of Russia’s military expansion at the world’s northernmost region. Moscow, it points out, has around 40 icebreakers (whereas the US has just one) and “has made significant investments” in the creation of a new Arctic Command. It is also building or renovating 19 deep-water ports and 14 airfields in the region.

Exclusive - NATO aims to make space new frontier in defence
BRUSSELS (Reuters) - NATO aims to recognise space as a domain of warfare this year, four senior diplomats said, partly to show U.S. President Donald Trump that the alliance is relevant and adapting to new threats after he signed off on the creation of a U.S. Space Force.
The decision, set to be taken at a Dec. 3-4 leaders summit in London that Trump is due to attend, would formally acknowledge that battles can be waged not only on land, in the air, at sea and on computer networks, but also in space.
“There’s agreement that we should make space a domain and the London summit is the best place to make it official,” said one senior NATO diplomat involved in the discussions, although cautioning that technical policy work was still underway.
NATO diplomats deny the alliance would be on a war footing in space, but say declaring it a domain would begin a debate over whether NATO should eventually use space weapons that can shut down enemy missiles and air defences or destroy satellites.

3 dead, dozens injured as large fire erupts in apartment building in Paris (PHOTOS)
Three people have died and one was seriously injured in a fire that broke out in a building in central Paris. Another 27 people including a firefighter also received minor injuries resulting from smoke inhalation.
One of the victims died after jumping out of the window while two others perished in the flames, a spokesman for the fire department said.
According to firefighters, the flame erupted early Saturday morning in a 6-story apartment building in Paris’ 11th district, rue de Nemours. The structure also houses a restaurant and a steam room.

“Fifteen rescues were made immediately by ladders and scales hooks,” said Fire Department captain Florian Lointier said.
According to locals, the building was under reconstruction, which allowed several residents to escape via the scaffolding.
