Most of this stems because man has corrupted whatever the message was originally supposed to be.
We seem to have a bad habit of doing that.
As far as the big events are concerned, such as Sodom and Gomorrah, I've had the opportunity to learn that several religions document these events, thankfully as it was rather eye opening.

I understand that sentiment, I've had the luxury of living a quiet life for the most part so I can't say that I understand, more so I just empathize since I couldn't begin to imagine what it would be like, let alone how I would react or function during such an event.
