To feed the machine (ai although I refer to them as what they are), data data data, the moar you habs the better your machine. It is a collection of peoples responses to stimuli, the direction interests or how a train of thought develops, the inter actions of groups based upon like and conflicting metrics and endless other things. Basically the more you have the better you can refine your machine and then turn around and use it to do things like predict behavior, emulate behavior and then be able control it using the fore mentioned. It is more then just selling you hit but then often time that is exactly what power is about selling everyone else some shit.
