It is a thing in Texas, learned about it the first summer I lived there in 2001. But the story is a teensy bit different. The story is the slaves were not told they were free and just found out about it on June 19th. Up to that time they were still being held in slavery, I believe it was over a year between the emancipation proclamation and when the Texas slaves learned of their freedom.
