HAMPTON, Va. (WAVY) — State leaders are holding a meeting in Hampton Monday evening to discuss gun violence in Virginia.

Secretary of Public Safety and Homeland Security Brian Moran will host discussions at the Hampton Public Library with community leaders and advocates to discuss the “gun violence emergency” in Virginia.

The meeting is one of seven scheduled in the lead up to a July 9 special session where lawmakers are expected to take up a new package of gun control legislation from Gov. Ralph Northam. Other discussions have been held in Richmond, Fredericksburg and Abingdon.

Northam called for the special session after 12 people were killed in a mass shooting at the Virginia Beach Municipal Center in late May.

Northam’s legislation package calls for universal background checks, a ban on silencers and a ‘red flag’ bill that would temporarily take guns away from people who are a threat to themselves and others.

The timing of Monday’s meeting comes as Hampton police are investigating a shooting at Buckroe Beach over the weekend left two children and two adults injured. One of the children, a 12-year-old, was hospitalized in serious condition.

A closed meeting roundtable discussion is happening at 6:30p.m., while a community forum is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
