I know a little bit about this. They appear in multiple cultures all over the world and are known as "Fisher Kings" The Babylonian god is called Oannes. He is one of 7 sages that the later Akkadians called the Apkallu.
Viracocha in Peru, bochica in Colombia and Quatslcoatl is a similar deity in Mexico
Researching my Grt Grandmother's unusual family name ended up going down this rabbit hole. (Bit of an etymology obsessed freak) it seems the ancient capital of UR is connected.
My grandmother (x2) was called Orm. Which is a Nordic name of "unknown origin" meaning Dragon or serpent. Derives from the germanic word Worm (pronounced Vorom) original Worms were sea serpents not earth worms.
I automatically thought of UR and its strange serpent man statues (pic attached- notice the armour)
I wish i saved the translation but when researching cuniform i found a translation of UR as a strange aquatic creature that was like a monitor lizard that in Arabic translates to Waran.
This strange aquatic creature is also found in the legends of the founding of mexico (which was built on water) they were informed by Quatzlcoatl to find the place where this creature lived and build there.
Back to the serpent men of UR. Notice the armour? Well, in India there is also the Naga a race of half serpent people that live in a subterranean world off the east coast of India. In India there is the Caste system. One of the most important families from that region (and the top class before a reshuffling made religious the top class) was Vera (VeraCocha, Waran, Worm) who were a warrior class/family that worshipped the naga . you find this theme running throughout, the Swedish translation of Orm gives Armour too.
The Pharoahs crown with the snake in the middle- the snake is called URaeus
The Crocodile god Sobek also is connected by the name but this is all off the top of my head and i can't remember how. I will try to find it, but i vaguely remember that its an old name from the first dynasties that was changed.
I will try to source if anyone is interested in this.
