Weather is caused by electric charges. Most of the ground formations we observe today were caused by intense currents of electricity that flowed across the surface of the planet in the past. These electric currents were capable of transmutation of matter, forever changing not only the surface features of the Earth, but the chemical composition of the material, as well.
Might sound far fetched. But I've noticed the same stuff you're noticing on a global scale. This was after spending countless hours studying satellite images, trying to understand why the Earth looked the way it does. Conventional, or rather "mainstream", geology does not adequately explain anything I've seen. But this is very likely what you are observing, IMHO.
