Honduran military police opened fire at protesters outside the national university, injuring five people. Authorities said live ammunition was used in response to molotov cocktails which injured officers.

Protests demanding the resignation of the country's president, Juan Orlando Hernandez, have intensified in recent weeks as momentum gathers against privatization and austerity measures targeting the health and education sectors.

“About 40 military police entered the university campus without authorization,” Armando Sarmiento, director of institutional development at the Tegucigalpa-based university, told AFP. The military police reportedly pursued the students across the campus “shooting them with live rounds,” Sarmiento added.

Five students were treated at a local hospital for bullet wounds but their injuries were not life-threatening.

Iranian President calls White House ‘mentally retarded’ over recent sanctions

ranian President Hassan Rouhani has stated that the sanctions against Tehran show the US administration’s “despair”, calling the White House “mentally retarded”. Rouhani stressed that the sanctions against the country’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei are futile, because he has no assets abroad.

The statement comes after Iranian diplomats slammed US policy toward the Islamic Republic.

“Imposing useless sanctions on Iran’s Supreme Leader [Ayatollah Ali Khamenei] and the commander of Iran’s diplomacy [Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif] is the permanent closure of the path of diplomacy”, Foreign Ministry spokesman Abbas Mousavi stated.

The US sanctions targeting top Iranian statesmen come after the downing of a US drone by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps last week. According to Tehran, the UAV and P-8 Poseidon spy plane accompanying it had violated the country’s border.

At the same time, the US insists that the aircraft was flying above neutral waters in the Strait of Hormuz.

Council of Europe backs restoring Russian voting rights after stripping them over Crimea annexation

The Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe voted on Monday to allow Russian representatives to return to the body after its voting rights were revoked five years ago over the annexation of Crimea.

The Council of Europe is an international organisation set up to promote democracy, as well as protect human rights and the rule of law on the continent.

Its best-known body is the European Court of Human Rights and its Parliamentary Assembly (PACE) has more than 300 lawmakers from the organisation's 47 member states.

The motion restoring Russia's voting rights was approved late on Monday evening with 118 votes in favour, 62 against, and 10 abstentions.

Netherlands emergency services hit by major telecoms outage

A widespread telecommunications outage hit large parts of the Netherlands on Monday, crippling emergency services and rendering police and other government services unreachable.

The outage originated on the network of national carrier Royal KPN NV, which is also used by other telecommunications providers.

People with medical or other emergencies were instructed on Twitter to go directly to hospitals, fire departments or local police stations.

The main police and emergency numbers were not working.

KPN and the Dutch Economic Affairs Ministry, responsible for telecommunications, could not be reached by phone, and emails seeking comment were not immediately answered.

A police spokeswoman told the national broadcaster that all working police officers were being sent out on patrol.

‘Biblical Flat Earth Society’ founder is charged with 56 counts of child exploitation

Fundamentalist Christian and self-proclaimed founder of the “Biblical Flat Earth Society,” Phillip Stephen Stallings, was arrested this week and charged with 56 counts of child sexual exploitation, as reported by local news station WTDV.

The 40-year-old Durham, North Carolina resident is facing dozens of charges for sexually exploiting minors for allegedly downloading media that involved minors engaged in sexual situations and sharing this illegal media on social platforms.

He was arrested on Wednesday morning at his home by Durham County deputies as a part of a U.S. Department of Homeland Security investigation, according to WRAL.com.

“It’s part of an investigation across the nation right now for possession of child pornography and creation of child pornography,” said Durham County Assistant District Attorney Kendra Montgomery-Blinn during a short court hearing on Thursday morning. “They had information that Mr. Stallings was sharing his materials on a social media platform.”

Stallings faces 28 counts of second-degree sexual exploitation of a minor and 28 counts of third-degree sexual exploitation of a minor after being caught with child pornography. He has also been served with a warrant related to both cyberstalking and financial card theft.
