Trump And Putin To Meet On Friday

US President Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin will meet for one hour of sideline talks during the Group of 20 summit in Osaka, Japan, on Friday.

Kremlin aide Yury Ushakov told reporters on Wednesday that each president would be accompanied by four or five officials, according to Interfax.

The two will disucss "issues of strategic stability, numerous regional conflicts" including Iran, Syria, North Korea, Venezuela and Afghanistan, according to Ushakov.

Trump threatened retaliatory attacks on Iran after blaming it for attacks on two oil tankers, while Iran has also shot down a U.S. surveillance drone.

Tehran has denied responsibility for the tanker attacks and has said the U.S. drone was flying in Iranian airspace.

Arm control treaties, which both Putin and Trump threatened to quit, will also be discussed by the two, according to the Kremlin fact sheet prepared for the meeting. -US News

"It's not a formal summit, but it is expected to be a conversation that will focus primarily on regional security issues, including Iran, Ukraine, Syria, the Middle East," said a senior US administration official, adding "They should also touch on arms control issues and on improving the bilateral relationship."

The two world leaders met briefly last November and December, following their July summit in Helsinki where both men met only with interpreters.

Putin will also speak publicly a number of times during the G20 according to Ushakov, and plans to address "existing imbalances in the international financial system… (and) issues related to escalation of trade conflicts."

"(Putin) Will share his views regarding the strengthening of the role of the World Trade Organization as a universal platform for resolving various disputes and for dialogue on global trade and economic issues," said the aide.

EU hits Broadcom with interim demands in antitrust probe

BRUSSELS (Reuters) - EU antitrust regulators want U.S. chipmaker Broadcom to scrap its exclusivity clauses with TV and modem makers to avoid irreparable harm to the market while they investigate whether this tactic and others are designed to block rivals.

The European Commission said the so-called interim measures, the first in 18 years, were warranted because of Broadcom’s likely dominance in the TV and modem chipset markets and deals between the company and seven major customers that resulted in the latter buying chips only from Broadcom.

The EU competition enforcer on Wednesday sent a statement of objections, or charge sheet, to the company setting out reasons why such measures are needed. Broadcom has two weeks to respond. It can also ask for a closed door hearing to defend itself.

Such measures are rare because of the high bar proving lasting harm. The Commission imposed interim measures against German insurer IMS Health in 2001 because of serious and irreparable damage to two rivals.

The San Jose, California-based company’s communications chips power Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and GPS connectivity in smartphones.

Commission chief economist Tommaso Valletti said enforcers were sending a strong signal.

“This is good because it says to the company: you are doing something which is possibly noxious. Stop now. Immediate effect. To the extent this is foreclosing others, then it stops now, not in 10 years,” Valletti said in a tweet.

The Commission said its investigation would focus on Broadcom’s practices including exclusive purchasing obligations, tying rebates or other benefits to exclusive or minimum purchase requirements, product bundling, abusive IP-related strategies and deliberately making it difficult for Broadcom products to function with rival products

Broadcom’s anti-competitive practices prevent its customers, and ultimately consumers, from enjoying the benefits of choice and innovation, European Competition Commissioner Margrethe Vestager said in a statement.

Broadcom said it believes it complies with European Competition rules and that the concerns are “without merit.”

Tesla’s senior production executive at Fremont facility quits

Tesla Inc’s vice president of production at its Fremont factory, Peter Hochholdinger, has left after three years with the electric-car maker, a source familiar with the matter told Reuters.

He was tasked with improving production for Tesla’s luxury Model S sedan and Model X sport utility vehicle as well as helping build a cost-effective manufacturing program for the Model 3, the company had said https://reut.rs/2KFSyd2 in his appointment memo.

Hochholdinger’s departure is the latest in a string of high-profile executives to leave Tesla over the past two years as the automaker struggles to ramp up production of Model 3 sedan, which is seen as crucial for its long-term profitability.

He joined Tesla from Volkswagen AG, where he spent 22 years supervising production of Audi A4, A5 and Q5 models. When Audi made a new production facility in Mexico, he served as an adviser.

Both Tesla and Hochholdinger did not respond to Reuters requests for comment.

Demand for Tesla cars is one of the major concerns of investors after the company reported slack demand in the first quarter against the backdrop of U.S.-China trade tensions.

Tesla had reported a 31% fall in first-quarter deliveries and warned that profit would be delayed until the latter half of the year.

The automaker is expected to report its second-quarter delivery and production numbers in July.

Shares of the company were up nearly 2% at $223.95.
