Trump’s Chief Of Protocol Reportedly To Resign Amid Allegations Of Keeping Whip In Office

The chief of protocol for the Trump administration reportedly plans to resign amid a potential investigation into behavior at his office, including allegations he carried a whip, according to people with knowledge of the matter. Sean Lawler is a State Department official and ambassador who has been the chief of protocol for over 18 months. He was supposed to join President Donald Trump at the G-20 on Friday and Saturday. The G-20 is an international forum comprised of 19 countries and the European Union, and Lawler would have played an important role, the sources said, according to Bloomberg.

The investigation is reportedly looking into claims that Lawler intimidated staff and carried a whip in his office. There are also allegations he raised his voice and used profanity in the office, was demeaning to employees and was unprofessional, a State Department official said. Senior staff in the protocol office were told Lawler was leaving because of personnel issues, according to CNN. However, Lawler was allegedly told he needed to leave because of the nature of the investigation, two State Department officials said. He has reportedly been suspended indefinitely amid the possible investigation.

Mary-Kate Fischer, the assistant chief of protocol, will reportedly take Lawler’s place at the G-20 in Japan. Trump will be meeting with the leaders of China, Russia and Turkey, among others. Trump has repeatedly asked why Lawler is still in the position, the sources said. “A large chunk of the protocol office was aware of this behavior for a long time,” the official said, according to CNN. “They’re surprised, to be honest, that this hadn’t been dealt with sooner.”

Bill Barr Shreds On The Bagpipes At The Opening Of US Attorneys’ Conference

U.S. Attorney General Bill Barr played the bagpipes at the start of the U.S. Attorneys’ Conference in Washington D.C, Wednesday morning. The U.S. Attorneys’ Conference opened with a performance from the Emerald Society Pipe Band, consisting of men in kilts marching while playing bagpipes and drums. Barr sat on stage observing the performance until the music suddenly stopped. He then rose from his chair and briefly walked back stage to retrieve a set of his own bagpipes.

He began to play “Scotland the Brave,” as the performers joined in with drums and pipes. At the end of the performance, Barr set down his pipes and proceeded to address the attendance at the podium.

“Thank you, thank you,” he said a the crowd applauded. “Now how was that for an icebreaker?” he asked. Barr began to explain to the audience how the performance was organized. “Jessie and Rob and Zack thought they were going to surprise me by having the Emerald Society Pipe Band come down from New York,” he explained. “But as you know, I’m very proficient at…dare I say the word: spying,” he joked. “And I discovered the plot, and so this was my counter surprise.”

Top EPA Official Steps Down After Spearheading Trump’s Deregulatory Agenda

A top Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) official is leaving after spearheading much of President Donald Trump’s deregulatory agenda, the agency announced Wednesday. “I would like to thank Assistant Administrator Bill Wehrum for his service, his dedication to his job, the leadership he provided to his staff and the agency, and for his friendship,” EPA Administrator Andrew Wheeler said in a statement.

Wehrum, who headed the EPA’s air and radiation office, spearheaded rewriting Obama-era regulations targeted by the Trump administration. Wehrum’s biggest deregulatory move leading the effort to repeal and replace the Clean Power Plan with the narrower Affordable Clean Energy (ACE) rule. Wehrum also worked on freezing Obama-era greenhouse gas tailpipe regulations and various permitting reforms. EPA is scheduled to finalize its freezing of tailpipe standards later this year.

“Bill was hands down the most effective assistant administrator the Office of Air and Radiation has ever had,” said Mandy Gunasekara, a former EPA attorney who worked with Wehrum, told The Daily Caller News Foundation. “He’s leaving on a high note in terms of regulatory achievement and a legacy of showing a young political team how to engage with the esteemed civil servants to achieve great things including a better environmental future for this country.”

Wheeler asked Principal Deputy Assistant Administrator Anne Idsal to serve as acting head of EPA’s air and radiation office. Wehrum departs EPA amid scrutiny over possible ethics rules violations, with many reports of his departure emphasizing the issue. But a source close to Wehrum said he initially never planned to serve for more than a year. The Senate confirmed Wehrum in November 2017. Wherum will depart EPA at the end of the month, according to the agency. Wehrum stayed at EPA longer than planned in order to wrap up work on major agency actions, like finishing the ACE rule, the source told the DCNF. Rolling back Obama-era policies took longer than Wehrum expected, the source said. “While he was frustrated at the democrats effort to lodge unsubstantiated ethical attacks, that had no bearing on his decision. He always planned to leave after a year or so,” Gunasekara said.

Alleged ethics breaches, pushed by Democrats and environmentalists, stem from Wehrum’s previous work as an attorney for energy companies regulated by EPA that sought to nix some regulations. House Democrats launched an investigation into Wehrum in February on news reports the former industry attorney didn’t comply with the Trump administration’s ethics pledge. Reports found Wehrum met with two former clients before consulting EPA ethics officials. Wehrum also participated in an EPA decision that seemed to benefit a former client, The Washington Post reported, though told The Post he had determined his actions did not violate federal ethics rules. “It is, at the very least, going to take years to undo the damage that has been done,” the Sierra Club’s John Coequyt told The Post.

GoFundMe Fundraising for Planned Parenthood, Abortion Industry

Crowdfunding site GoFundMe, a for-profit site that allows users to generate donation funds, has created its own fund to raise money for Planned Parenthood, the ACLU, and other abortion industry groups. “A new social fundraising movement to protect abortion and reproductive rights has been launched to support the National Network of Abortion Funds, Planned Parenthood Federation of America, Planned Parenthood Action Fund, American Civil Liberties Union, and the ACLU Foundation,” GoFundMe announced. “Donate now to join the fight.”

The site has joined other left-wing platforms and many in the Hollywood film industry as well in condemning restrictions on abortion. GoFundMe calls its campaign “Fight Back” and kicked it off with its own donation of $25,000. “Access to abortion is under attack in this country,” GoFundMe says, adding: Already too many face burdensome waiting periods, medically unnecessary restrictions, denials of insurance coverage, and other hurdles meant to make it harder to get an abortion. As a result, for too many people abortion is already inaccessible. And now, we are seeing a rash of abortion bans sweeping the country, all with one goal in mind — to bring a direct challenge to Roe v. Wadeto the Supreme Court, and take away the constitutional right to abortion altogether.

Using the language of the abortion industry – that abortion is “health care,” the site states abortion restrictions “will hit people of color and those who are struggling to make ends meet the hardest – the people who already face barriers to accessing good health care.” “While some wealthy people may be able to find a way around abortion bans, far too many — especially those who already face racism, homophobia, and transphobia — will be left with no options at all,” GoFundMe says.

According to the crowdfunding site, 40 percent of funds donated to its campaign will directly support Planned Parenthood Action Fund and the ACLU, while the remaining 60 percent will be distributed to GoFundMe.org, the site’s charity organization. The platform says its charity will then distribute those funds to Planned Parenthood Federation of America, the ACLU Foundation, and the National Network of Abortion Funds.

Planned Parenthood thanked GoFundMe on Twitter. GoFundMe says it has a goal of raising $500,000, and, at the time of publication, over $40,000 had been raised.
