Twitter is going to begin labeling and throttling tweets from politicians, government officials and candidates if they violate the rules of the platform — including tweets from President Donald Trump.

If a tweet is found to be in violation of Twitter’s rules, but in the public interest to hold the official “accountable,” the tweet will contain a disclaimer and will “feature less prominently on Twitter,” according to a new report from CNN.

“The Twitter Rules about abusive behavior apply to this Tweet,” a disclaimer will read before you can view the tweet. “However, Twitter has determined that it may be in the public’s interest for the Tweet to remain available.”

Russia Blamed For "Mysterious" GPS System Disruption In Israeli Airspace

GPS systems in Israeli airspace were "mysteriously disrupted", but the country has put measures in place to allow safe landings and takeoffs at its main international airport, according to Reuters.

The Israel Airports Authority (IAA) made an announcement following a report on Tuesday by the International Federation of Air Line Pilots' Associations (IFALPA) that many pilots had somehow lost satellite signals from the Global Positioning System around Tel Aviv's Ben Gurion Airport.

An IAA statement confirmed that the disruption only affected airborne crews and not terrestrial navigation systems. They said there had been GPS disruptions "for approximately the past three weeks".

Israeli authorities have been working to locate the source of the problem, but so far haven’t been able to. An IAA spokesperson, when asked if they had found an explanation, simply said: "No. I don't know."

“At no stage has there been a safety incident stemming from the GPS disruption in the context of the precision of navigation and flight corridors."

The Israeli Defense Ministry, when asked for comment, said that the disruption was "an IAA matter." According to YnetNews, Israeli Army Radio reported that the disruption was a result of a satellite signal jammer used by the Russian military at Hmeimim Air Base base in Syria.

“It’s fake news, we can’t take it seriously,” said a Russian source in response.

Trump: Tech companies, not Russia, trying to 'rig the election'

President Donald Trump today suggested tech giants like Google and Twitter are the greatest threat to the integrity of the 2020 presidential election — and said anti-conservative bias among the companies had a greater impact in 2016 than Russian meddling.

"Let me tell you, they're trying to rig the election," Trump said in a phone interview on Fox Business. "That's what we should be looking at, not that witch hunt, the phony witch hunt."

Charging Google with being "totally biased" in favor of Democrats and fomenting "hatred for the Republicans," Trump downplayed Russia's 2016 social media manipulation: "You know, they talk about Russia because they had some bloggers—and by the way, those bloggers, some of them were going both ways. They were for Clinton and for Trump."

Lawmakers, academics and U.S. intelligence officials are in broad agreement that Russia mounted a vast online disinformation campaign ahead of the 2016 election with the aim of inflaming American political and social tensions, supporting Trump's candidacy and depressing Democratic voter turnout.

Trump's comments reiterated claims that he and other prominent Republicans have made alleging that tech companies like Google, Facebook and Twitter are biased against conservatives and deliberately stifle their accounts and content. The companies flatly deny these allegations.

His criticisms came immediately after an extended broadside against Twitter for allegedly blocking people from following his account on the site, a claim the president has made repeatedly without evidence.

Twitter didn't immediately respond to a request for comment. A Google spokesperson said, "We build our products with extraordinary care and safeguards to be a trustworthy source of information for everyone, without any regard for political viewpoint," noting the company's publicly available criteria for determining the quality of search results.

Oppo has announced a new proprietary communications technology designed to let people call or chat across medium distances without using cellular networks, Wi-Fi, or Bluetooth. The protocol is called MeshTalk and is a decentralized, end-to-end system that Oppo says can cover up to 3 kilometers (1.86 miles) outdoors — or even further in more crowded environments when signal relay between devices can be used.

Basically, Oppo devices will be able to create ad hoc local area networks across a wide area and communicate directly to each other without the need for base stations. The company claims that MeshTalk doesn’t have a significant effect on battery life, and indeed plans for it to work with a 72-hour standby mode so that phones can still be reached in an emergency when they’re low on power.

Oppo envisages MeshTalk being used in situations where you don’t have internet access or when traditional networks are too congested, such as at a concert or after landing at a foreign airport. It’s not clear whether it’ll work with existing Oppo phones, or when Oppo plans to launch the feature, but it’s being demonstrated this week at MWC Shanghai.

Bill De Blasio Unveils Plan For Progressives To Seize Supreme Court

Democratic presidential candidate Bill de Blasio said the Democrats must prevail in right-leaning jurisdictions for progressives to seize control of the Supreme Court.

The answer places him at odds with some 2020 Democrats who are considering expanding the Supreme Court.

“There’s a political solution we have to come to grips with — if the Democratic party would stop acting like the party of the elites, and be the party of working people again.”

The mayor added Democrats need to go into “red states — to convince people we’re on their side, we can put pressure on their senators to actually have to vote on the nominees that are put forward.”

Democrats are contemplating so-called “court-packing” in view of President Donald Trump’s historic judicial confirmation successes. The New York Times asked 21 of the 22 Democratic presidential candidates whether they would expand the Supreme Court — 10 said yes to varying extents, while 11 were not as open. The New York City mayor was among those candidates who expressed opposition to court-packing.

“I think there’s some things we have to say are set and then we have to work politically to make the changes we need,” de Blasio said. “I think at this point in history the best way to change America is through the electoral process, and that will very rapidly change our judiciary on many levels.”

“It will take longer with the Supreme Court, but I worry we will end up in a kind of arms race if one administration increases the size of the Court for their ends and then another party comes into power and increases it again, I don’t find that good for the county,” de Blasio added.

Elsewhere in his remarks de Blasio worked in a subtle dig at Democratic South Bend Mayor Pete Buttigieg, lamenting that a spate of police shootings have undermined minority confidence in police forces. He specifically name-dropped South Bend’s police department, which is currently grappling with the shooting death of 53-year-old Eric Jack Logan.

Pelosi’s Reason for Canceling ICE Raids Shows She’s Loyal to Illegals, Not US Children

When Democrats don’t have the facts on their side or don’t know how to logically argue for their position, they often resort to being emotionally manipulative with the American public.

And that’s exactly what House Speaker Nancy Pelosi did this week concerning the Immigration and Customs Enforcement raids that were intended to take place in 10 cities nationwide Sunday before their cancellation by President Donald Trump.

At an event in New York on Monday, Pelosi took credit for the cancellation, referencing a recent phone call with the president in which she specifically asked him to cancel all ICE raids, according to Breitbart.

Why? For the children, of course!

“When I spoke to the president I said, ‘look I’m a mom. I have five kids, nine grandchildren and children are scared. You’re scaring the children of America, not just in those families but their neighbors and their communities,'” Pelosi told the audience.

“You’re scaring the children,” she repeated.

It’s difficult to know where to even begin with the incoherence in Pelosi’s statement.

She’s literally arguing that the “fear” generated by an important law enforcement procedure should prevent it from being undertaken.

But, even if that were true, I’d be willing to bet that if you were to ask any reasonable American parent if they would like immigration officials to halt the arrest and deportation of potentially dangerous people — who may one day hurt them or their loved ones — they would probably laugh you out of the room.

Sure, it’s definitely going to be scary for illegal aliens and their children if and when the day comes that ICE agents show up and start slapping on the handcuffs.

And yes, it would be scary for U.S. children if one of those raids happened at a place where they were present.

Anytime law enforcement arrive on scene in raid gear for any reason, it tends to be a little intimidating for onlookers — especially kids. And nobody wants to scare a kid.

Conservatives are not monsters for crying out loud.

But to use that as an excuse to stop the raids or similar law enforcement actions is absurd, to say the least.

If we were to change law enforcement and government standard procedure based on Pelosi’s charge that it’s too scary for kids, then should we even have police arresting anyone, anywhere while children are present?

Should police not shoot and kill an armed suspect who’s threatening someone’s life just because a nearby child might be shaken up?

Again, it’s ridiculous that these examples even need to be used but, by her logic, it’s apparently necessary.

The increased safety generated by law enforcement activities like arrests, or even the forceful neutralization of, a bad guy is obviously worth the trade-off of a handful of children being momentarily frightened.

Look, we get that Pelosi is pandering to her base, but what a cheap way to go about it.

She’s taken a complete break from reason on this and hopefully at least some folks on her side realize that this is a lazy and, quite frankly, embarrassingly foolish justification for preventing ICE agents from doing their jobs.

Ford asks car dealership to pull ad for free shotgun, Bible, and American flag with vehicle purchase — and Alabama outfit complies

One might say an Alabama car dealership's advertisement for a free 12-gauge shotgun, Bible, and American flag with every vehicle purchasethrough July 31 went just a little too viral.

Indeed, after Chatom Ford's patriotic offer hit the national news, the dealership said Wednesday that Ford itself intervened and asked the outfit to end the advertisement.

"We were running a promotion celebrating this country's independence. Ford Motor Company has asked us to stop running the advertisement," Chatom Ford said on Facebook. "They manufacture the products we are franchised to sell, so we are complying with their request. We appreciate everyone's support. All the phone calls and messages were so greatly appreciated. We will fulfill all commitments we made to our customers."

What's the background?

The pulled ad read, "GOD, GUNS, AND FREEDOM" and said the trio of gifts with car purchases was an "opportunity for us to celebrate our independence."

The dealership added that all those eligible to receive the gifts must be 18 or older, have valid identification, be allowed to legally purchase a vehicle, and have passed all checks associated with owning a gun "in state of residency."

Koby Palmer, general sales manager, told WOFL-TV that Chatom Ford doesn't keep guns at the dealership "nor do we give guns directly to our customers. We provide certificates that they present to the licensed firearms dealer. If the customers do not want or can not purchase a gun, they can use the certificate for something else."

Palmer added to Fox News that the dealership partnered with certified firearm dealers in Alabama and Mississippi, and that those dealers conduct the background checks.

He also told the network that the dealership's sales team got the idea for the gifts because they reflect the town's values.

"It's a safe community," Palmer told Fox News. "They're very proud of their country, and almost everybody here likes to hunt."

He also told USA Today that Chatom Ford sold five vehicles since the promotion launched and that "in a small town, business is booming."

Report: DHS Sec. Accused of Leaking Trump’s ICE Raid Now Tied to Obama, Hillary

Leaks and internal struggles have plagued the Trump administration since day one, and now it looks like yet another die-hard Democrat supporter may have been pulling strings in Washington to undermine the president.

On Saturday, the Washington Examiner reported that a key Immigration and Customs Enforcement operation intended to round up certain illegal aliens was called off after an insider allegedly passed confidential details of the operation to the media.

Two days before the operation was set to begin, outlets including The Washington Post announced it to the world, effectively eliminating any element of surprise.

“President Trump has directed U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents to conduct a mass roundup of migrant families that have received deportation orders, an operation that is likely to begin with predawn raids in major U.S. cities on Sunday,” The Post reported.

But that “roundup” never happened, and the reason may be a political coup. According to homeland security reporter and border expert Anna Giaritelli, fingers now point to a longtime Democrat ally as the “leaker” who tipped off the media and the law breakers.

“This week’s big leak about a major Immigration and Customs Enforcement operation was orchestrated by acting Homeland Security Secretary Kevin McAleenan in an effort to sabotage the raids before they were scheduled to take place, according to three current and two former senior administration officials,” Giaritelli wrote in the Examiner.

“[A]ll five officials who spoke with the Washington Examiner confirmed McAleenan’s decision to go rogue and stymie the operation was what prompted the White House to call off the 10-city operation,” the report continued.

It would make sense if McAleenan was the one who threw a wrench into the ICE mission. Government sources interviewed by Giaritelli allegedly said that the secretary had pushed back against the raids for months.

And McAleenan traveled to the border last week with Washington Post journalist Nick Miroff — the same source which published details of the planned raid.

If there was any question about McAleenan’s possible motivations, a follow-up story from the Examiner should clear it up.

Records show that the official suspected by insiders to be the leaker was a loyal backer of former President Barack Obama, while his wife was clearly a Hillary Clinton supporter.

Material from Library’s Youth Pride Celebration Encourages Them to Become ‘the Lord of Unzipping Flies’

The culture war is real.

There is a battle, both physical and spiritual, for the heart and soul of America. And like any war, those most vulnerable are children.

That’s why it matters when a public library in Renton, Washington permits an event that targets children with messages that encourage sexual behavior, hands out sex paraphernalia and then bans adults who show up to the event with questions.

Now there will be those that are thinking I’m close-minded and need to just understand that this is the way things are now. But as a parent of 4, I am interested in the messages that the culture is shoving in their little brains. And pardon for me for wanting to be able to assume that a event for kids at a public library might be — I don’t know — kid friendly.

The event in question was a “Teen Pride” celebration. The event’s official description was “Learn about local organizations here to support you! Free lunch and dinner! Fun crafts! Loads of activities! Open mic! Karaoke! Advice panels! Safer sex presentations! A drag show! Free swag! Free binder raffle!”

In case you don’t know what that last thing is your kids could have won at the library raffle, “binders” are clothing for “trans people” and are “the first garments designed and patented specifically for gender-affirming chest binding.”

Pelosi Faces Pressure to Approve Border Funding Bill, as Senate Rejects House Changes

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) is facing pressure to approve a $4.6 billion emergency border aid package after Congress reached a stalemate on the bill designed to address the humanitarian crisis at the U.S.-Mexico border.

On June 27, Pelosi called on the Trump administration and the Senate to meet with House Democrats to sort out their differences on the bill before the weeklong Independence Day recess in a letter circulated to Democrats.

“We are calling upon the Trump Administration and the Senate to engage in an immediate conference to do the best we can for the children before we leave for the 4th of July,” Pelosi said in the letter.

The border funding package to fund President Donald Trump’s humanitarian aid request for the southern border returned to the House after passing the Senate with overwhelming bipartisan support, 84-8, on June 26. The House amended the Senate bill on the morning of June 27 to include more measures for migrant children.

Democrats want to add more protections for migrant children, including medical and hygiene standards at facilities, and a requirement that any death of a minor is reported within 24 hours.

Pelosi is considering a fresh vote on June 27 for the amended measures and pressed for the House Democrats’ demands during a press conference on the same day.

Meanwhile, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, while speaking on the Senate floor, has rejected the new changes proposed by House Democrats. He called on Pelosi and the House to accept the Senate’s version of the bill “without any more unnecessary delays” and give final congressional approval to the legislation.

Both House and Senate measures contain more than $1 billion to shelter and feed migrants detained by the border patrol and almost $3 billion to care for unaccompanied migrant children who are turned over the Department of Health and Human Services. The Senate measure is not as strict in setting conditions on the delivery of funding to care for unaccompanied children and contains funding for the Defense Department and Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), which is opposed by House Democrats.

Moreover, the bills include provisions that stop funding from being shifted to Trump’s border wall and denies additional funding for ICE detention beds.

“If House Democrats send the Senate some partisan effort to disrupt our bipartisan progress, we will simply move to table it,” McConnell said. “The United States Senate is not going to pass a border funding bill that cuts the money for ICE and the Department of Defense. It’s not going to happen.”

“We already have a compromise,” he added while citing the Senate bill. “It’s time to quit playing games, time to make a law.”

Tunisia President rushed to hospital ‘in critical condition’

Tunisia’s President Beji Caid Essebsi has been rushed to hospital in a critical condition.

The 92-year-old was rushed to a military hospital in the Tunisian capital Tunis earlier this afternoon after falling “seriously ill”. Though some media outlets reported that the president had died, Essebsi’s aide Firas Guefrech warned in a tweet not to be “misled by rumours”.

Tunisia’s Prime Minister, Youssef Chahed, added in a Facebook post that Essebsi is currently “receiving all the necessary attention he needs” in hospital.

This came just hours after Tunis was hit by a twin suicide attack, leaving scores wounded and at least one dead. The attack – responsibility for which has not yet been claimed by any individual or group – appeared to have targeted Tunisian security forces, hitting a police patrol and officers stationed outside the Tunisian government’s anti-terrorism brigade headquarters in the city’s Al-Qarjani district.

The president was previously hospitalised on Friday over health concerns, but was discharged the next day. He recently announced that he would not run in Tunisia’s upcoming elections in November, saying someone younger should lead the country.

Essebsi became Tunisia’s first democratically elected president in 2014, having founded the Nidaa Tounes party in 2012 in the wake of the Jasmine Revolution, which has since been seen as the spark for the Arab Spring.

He has boasted a long political career, having been appointed interior minister by Tunisia’s first post-independence president, Habib Bourguiba, in 1965.

It is understood that if anything were to happen to the president, the speaker of Tunisia’s parliament, Mohamed Ennaceur, will take over his duties until elections are held.

To guard against any such thing happening, Israel’s Ambassador to the United Nations, Danny Danon, wrote a deliberately offensive and insulting opinion piece on 24 June that the New York Times was happy to publish. “What’s wrong with Palestinian surrender?” mused Ambassador Danon. “Surrender is the recognition that in a contest, staying the course will prove costlier than submission.” Having backed the Palestinians into a corner from which they could only say no, Kushner then had Danon stick the knife in.

The message, in all its arrogance, was clear: if you don’t take what is on offer, it is going to get a hell of a lot worse. However, we know we have made it impossible for you to take what is on offer, so guess what? The two state solution is well and truly dead; the path to a greater Israel is secured; welcome to the new reality of Palestinian Bantustans in the West Bank and Gaza. And, oh yes, we promise to throw cash at you, $50 billion; that’s a lot of dosh, if you do what is commanded of you. If you don’t, well that money is off the table.

While many commentators have rightly attacked the New York Times for publishing an openly racist and hate-mongering piece, they may have missed the larger significance of what is happening at speed in the killing of the two-state solution. The day before the Danon article, US National Security Advisor John Bolton accompanied the Israeli Prime Minister to land overlooking the Jordan Valley, the most fertile region of the West Bank. Nearly 90 per cent of the valley has been allocated to Israeli settlements and agriculture, in violation of UN Security Council Resolution 242 and international law.

Really, with abominations like “Drag Queen Story Hour” they hardly even bother to hide it anymore.

Ending the traditional family founded on marriage and the birth of children is the intended but hidden goal, as confirmed in 2012 by Soviet-born LGBT activist Masha Gessen, prior to the US Supreme’s Court’s establishing same-sex marriage nationwide:

‘[I]t is a no-brainer that the institution of marriage should not exist. . . . Fighting for gay marriage generally involves lying about what we’re going to do with marriage when we get there, because we lie that the institution of marriage is not going to change, and that is a lie. The institution of marriage is going to change, and it should change, and again, I don’t think it should exist.’

For the past several years governments of formerly Christian countries in North America and Europe have made LGBT ideology an integral element of their promotion of “human rights” and “democracy” in formerly communist countries. This includes pressuring compliant governments of European countries recently emerged from communism to hold “Pride parades” that offend local sensibilities. (Mystifyingly, there is no effort to force such demonstrations on Riyadh, Islamabad, etc.)

Recent targets of such sexual subversion have been Ukraine (where it has been a key element of the US State Department’s and the Ecumenical Patriarchate’s attack on the canonical Orthodox Church) and Moldova (where the US embassy took the lead in a joint statement hailing the “the International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia [and] … support for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex (LGBTI)”). The “workshop” in Bahrain began with President Donald Trump’s adviser and son-in-law Jared Kushner delivering a speech in which he unveiled a $50 billion economic package intended to “unleash” the Palestinians’ potential as well as help develop neighboring Lebanon and Jordan. Kushner referred to a “bustling tourist center in Gaza” without acknowledging Israel’s siege of the coastal strip and the dire humanitarian crises in the blockaded enclave. IMF Director Christine Lagarde spoke about applying lessons from Mozambique to Palestine. Steve Schwarzman, an American billionaire whose personal wealth exceeds Palestine’s annual GDP, advised the Palestinians to follow the model of Singapore. The U.S. ambassador to Israel, David Friedman, hailed the “workshop” as an “attempt to jumpstart the Palestinian economy” and “improve the quality of life of Palestinians.”

A Crushing Economic Crisis Will Ultimately Destroy Zionist Power in America

Pundits and keen observers of the current state of affairs in America are divided over how and why the country will eventually collapse. There are those who believe the country’s Achilles heel is its astronomical level of unsustainable debt that will lead to economic disaster. Another group maintains that de-dollarization in the global economy - following the lead of China and Russia – will eventually destroy the United States.

A third group maintains that America will be torn apart by a civil war between the progressive forces pitted against the racist and reactionary right.

There is something to be said for all three of these positions, but the biggest threat to America actually comes from Zionism.

In 1975 when the United Nations still had some semblance of independence, a resolution was passed identifying Zionism with racism. This resolution (# 3379) was unequivocal in its condemnation. And rightfully so. Any visit to the Holy Land will convince the open- minded tourist that Zionism is – unfortunately – a most virulent form of racism. In fact, former president Jimmy Carter refers to Israel as an “Apartheid” state – an observation for which he was unjustly labeled an “anti-Semitic”. This strategy of attacking any critic of Zionist racism as “anti-Semitic” (an ad hominen attack) serves two purposes: it demonizes the opponent of Zionism by focusing on the character of a person rather than analyzing the issue being raised by the critic.

There is serious discussion within government and academic circles to have any criticism of the state of Israel equated with “anti-Semitism”. This is the ugly face of Zionism subverting one of our most precious rights: freedom of speech.

The owners of the American news media (overwhelmingly Zionists) use a similar tactic by creating a cult of personalities placed into positions of influence and power to deflect attention away from the racist ideology of Zionism. Judicial Watch Statement on Supreme Court Ruling Blocking Citizenship Question for 2020 Census

(Washington, DC) – Judicial Watch President Tom Fitton made the following statement in response to the Supreme Court of the United States’ ruling today delaying, perhaps permanently, the Trump administration’s plan to include a question on the 2020 census inquiring about a respondent’s citizenship status.

It is unfortunate that the Supreme Court has endorsed the continued judicial harassment of the Trump administration. It ought to be an obvious point that the U.S. Census should try to figure out how many Americans and non-Americans are present in the United States.

The Trump administration should continue to try to move this issue through the courts in time for the 2020 census.

In mid-February, Judicial Watch joined with the Allied Educational Foundation (AEF) in filing an amici curiae brief in the United States Supreme Court, urging it to overturn the ruling of the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York blocking the Secretary of Commerce from adding a question about citizenship to the 2020 census. The brief argues that including a citizenship question would help Judicial Watch and the government make sure only eligible citizens are on the voting rolls:

Adding a citizenship question to the decennial census would generate a massive amount of new data concerning the numbers of citizens and noncitizens in U.S. states and counties. To quibble about potential limitations in the data that would be collected is to miss the point. It cannot be the case that we are somehow better off with less information.

The mountain of new data generated by the decennial census question will assist private litigants and the Department of Justice in their efforts to enforce the National Voter Registration Act. Indeed, this data will overcome limitations identified by a federal court concerning the current data on citizenship.

Senate passes $750B defense bill, leaving Iran vote for Friday

The Senate passed a mammoth $750 billion defense bill Thursday, though it still needs to resolve a fight over Iran.

Senators voted 86-8 on the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA), which authorizes spending and provides broad policy outlines for the Pentagon.

The bill provides $750 billion in total spending, including a base budget of $642.5 billion for the Pentagon and $23.3 billion for the Department of Energy’s national security programs.

It also gives $75.9 billion for the overseas contingency operations fund, an account that does not fall under budget cap restrictions.

Republicans touted the mammoth bill as the most significant defense policy bill that Congress will pass this year. The NDAA has been signed into law for nearly 60 consecutive years, making it a lightning rod for a wide array of related and unrelated measures.

“It would be difficult to overstate the importance of this legislation to the ongoing missions of our nation's men and women in uniform. The NDAA is simultaneously a target to guide the modernization of our all-volunteer force, a supply line to restore readiness and keep U.S. personnel equipped with the most cutting-edge lethal capabilities, a promise of critical support services to military families and a declaration to both our allies and adversaries of America’s strategic resolve,” Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) said from the Senate floor.

In a boost to the administration, the Senate bill includes the administration’s request for $3.6 billion to “back fill” money the White House diverted from the military construction account as part of his national emergency declaration to build part of the U.S.-Mexico border wall. However, it does not include the administration’s request for an additional $3.6 billion in wall funding.

The bill garnered hundreds of amendments, with 93 wrapped into a manager's package that cleared without a formal Senate floor vote.

But, similar to previous years, votes on the heap of potential amendments quickly hit a roadblock over a fight about which proposals would be allowed to get a vote. Senate Armed Services Committee Chairman James Inhofe (R-Okla.) has blamed Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) for the roadblock, though Paul has argued that he can’t block the bill but wants an open amendment process.

"I do believe that we should demand that there's an open debate with amendments,” Paul told reporters late last week.

Texas County Imposes 'Ban the Bible' Policy Rejected by Voters

On Tuesday, the Harris County Commissioner Court in Texas voted to impose a new government policy that had been rejected by Harris County voters in 2014. The county, which covers most of the Houston Metro area, will now include "sexual orientation" and "gender identity" (abbreviated as "SOGI") as protected classes for county employment purposes.

In a 3-2 party-line vote, the court added SOGI protections into the Harris County Personnel and Procedures Handbook. The revised handbook prohibits harassment or discrimination on the grounds of sexual orientation or gender identity, a controversial provision that often adversely affects those who adhere to traditional sexuality, including conservative Christians. Many lesbians and gays have spoken out against transgender protections, since a policy based on "gender identity" would result in erasing privacy protections for individuals on the basis of biological sex (by allowing biological males into women's restrooms, for example).

"Democrat county commissioners are putting politics over common sense policy for the people with their support of this controversial LGBT policy crafted behind closed doors," Texas Values President Jonathan Saenz said in a statement on the policy. "The lack of transparency on this controversial 'Ban the Bible' styled policy is more evidence that it’s wrong to put the government against people of faith. The people of Houston have consistently said 'no' to these Ban The Bible policies. This is just more evidence of local governments bypassing public input in order to fulfill their own liberal agendas."

Indeed, Harris County voters rejected a SOGI ordinance by a wide margin in 2014: 61 percent to 49 percent. Saenz also noted that the City of Laredo, southwest of Houston, tabled such a measure last November.

The Texas Values president faulted the Harris County Commissioner Court for not disclosing its intentions to the public. "The agenda for the June 25 meeting said the commissioners were adopting a policy that would prohibit discrimination and harassment as compliant with federal and state law. This is false," Texas Values argued. "The board planned to vote on sexual orientation and gender identity language at the request of Harris County Commissioner of Precinct 1, Rodney Ellis, who was appointed to the position recently but is up for election on the upcoming county ballot."

Saenz argued that the "lack of transparency of the agenda" gave Harris County residents no notice. Had residents known, they might have appeared to testify. Only four people addressed the issue before the vote.

The Texas legislature adopted a religious freedom bill — Senate Bill 17 — which protects licensed professionals such as doctors, accountants, lawyers, and counselors from disciplinary action from state boards when they act on their sincerely-held religious beliefs.
