Environmental groups opposed to the shipment coming to Britain are busy plotting their next move, but were nowhere in sight as the first delivery was made just after 11am.
News that Britain had agreed to take the consignment from Georgia was first revealed in the New York Times at the start of the week.
On Wednesday the Prime Minister, Tony Blair, strongly denied that his government tried to cover up the deal with American President Bill Clinton.
