Yeah, gotta say I disagree with a lot of that too. Starting with (1st) referring to violations of the 1st amendment. That is meaningless.
The financial model of the higher education system is in flames already. Plenty of news out there about it.
I don't think they even have to fire him by the deadline if they are going to indict him and convict him. Probably loses his pension due to that. If that is true, letting him slide and collect a couple of pension checks might be letting some bad guys think they are getting away with their crimes. Who knows, just a consideration.
