One Still Missing After Boat Accident In South Suburbs; ‘The Boat Looked So Bad’

CHICAGO (CBS) — One person is still missing and three are dead after their boat was ripped apart near southwest suburban Forest View, along the Chicago Sanitary and Ship Canal.

Elmer Jimenez’s fiancee, Joanna Feliciano, said he went out on a boat Tuesday with a few friends. Investigators found Jimenez’s body in the water Wednesday not far from where the boat was discovered. They say only the bow was above the water.

A second body was recovered Friday night and a third Saturday.

It looks like the boat hit something but investigators are still looking into what happened and why the boat sank.

Pilot of plane that crashed into North Carolina home reported 'control issue': NTSB

Two people died and another was injured late Thursday when a plane slammed into a home in Hope Mills, North Carolina.

The pilot and one person in the home died at the scene, according to a statement from the North Carolina Department of Public Safety. A third person "with serious injuries" was rushed to Cape Fear Valley Medical Center in Fayetteville.

Those three individuals have not been identified, authorities said.

Before the crash, the twin-engine Beechcraft Baron was in the traffic pattern at Fayetteville Regional Airport and reported "some kind of control issue" or "control problem to air traffic control," said Robert Gretz, a senior investigator with the National Transportation Safety Board.

Two aides to Lebanese minister killed as convoy hit by gunfire

BEIRUT (Reuters) - Two aides to a Lebanese Druze minister were killed on Sunday when his convoy came under fire in an area of support for a rival Druze faction, in what the minister called an assassination attempt.

Saleh al-Gharib, Lebanon’s minister of state for refugee affairs, is close to pro-Syrian Druze leader Talal Arslan.

Gharib said the incident had been “an armed ambush and a clear assassination attempt”.

“There appears to be a decision to blow up the situation on the mountain,” he said.

Intelligence agencies trying to access Merkel's medical records

The Bild claims that the foreign intelligence agencies are trying to gain access to Merkel's medical records in an attempt to reveal what caused the tremors and whether it was a disease or only dehydration, as Merkel claimed.

The first time that Merkel was seen trembling - at a ceremony with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zlanski - the chancellor claimed that she "was dehydrated and after drinking a few cups of water, she felt back to herself." But last week Merkel was trembling again during a ceremony with the German prime minister. The second time, she claimed that "this is a psychological tremor, as a result of the first time I trembled."

However, according to Bild's report, "Merkel has not said a word about the causes of the tremors and whether she is under any kind of treatment. Some intelligence services around the world are convinced that they have an explanation and are trying to get their hands on Merkel's medical records."

Doctors who were interviewed by Bild claimed that "this is a matter that needs to remain private. However, as soon as the chancellor refuses to talk about it, it's seen as a sign of weakness, that she has something to hide."

Merkel also seemed lethargic at the G20 conference at the end of last week, and told reporters that "I'm convinced that the trembling will disappear just like it appeared."

Palestinian Who Attended Trump-Backed Bahrain Conference Is Arrested

JERUSALEM — About a dozen Palestinian businessmen defied the official Palestinian boycott of the Trump administration’s economic conference in Bahrain last week.

Once there, most of them tried to maintain a low profile and keep their names out of the news media. The delegation returned to the West Bank on Thursday. But officers of the Palestinian Authority’s General Intelligence Service arrested one of them, Saleh Abu Mayala, on Friday night as he was walking from his car to his home in the West Bank city of Hebron, according to two Palestinian officials and the leader of the Palestinian business delegation to Bahrain, Ashraf Jabari.

One Palestinian official called his attendance at the conference an illegal act of betrayal.

Mr. Abu Mayala was later released, Jason D. Greenblatt, the White House’s special Mideast envoy, said in a post on Twitter. Palestinian officials had maintained official secrecy about the arrest, and it was not clear when exactly he was freed, but he was released without charge.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said on Sunday at the start of his weekly cabinet meeting that Mr. Abu Mayala had been released “due to American pressure.”

Intelligence officers summoned another conference participant, Ashraf Ghanem, also from Hebron, by phone on Friday night, after they did not find him at home. Instead of turning himself in, Mr. Ghanem was sheltering on Saturday in Mr. Jabari’s house, according to the two men, in the Israeli-controlled section of Hebron — an area where the Palestinian Authority security forces cannot operate without prior coordination with the Israelis.

A Palestinian security official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak publicly on a sensitive security issue, said the Palestinian businessmen’s participation in the conference was “tantamount to betrayal,” adding that Palestinian law punishes those who betray their homeland.

Once the Palestinian leadership had decided to boycott the event, he said, participation was not optional or a matter of individual freedom.

FETÖ suspects sentenced over raid targeting intelligence officers

A former chief prosecutor who ordered a raid on trucks belonging to the National Intelligence Directorate (MİT) was sentenced to 22 years and six months in prison, while a general who coordinated the raid was sentenced to 20 years. They were among 54 defendants in the case. The trial, which started in 2015, was closed to the press until the verdict hearing due to the sensitivity of the case.

In January 2014, trucks belonging to MİT carrying aid to northern Syria, where local Turkmens had been exposed to heavy airstrikes and attacks by the Assad regime, were stopped and intercepted by security forces in southern Turkey upon the order of former Adana Public Prosecutor Özcan Şişman and Brigadier General Hamza Celepoğlu, a gendarmerie commander.

The supplies in the trucks were seized, and MİT staffers were handcuffed before they were detained. The case stunned the nation, as it was the first time that the army explicitly intervened with Turkey's intelligence agency. The operation was conducted hurriedly, and the governor of the province was informed about the incident in its latest phase. It was later revealed that the raid was actually a plot by FETÖ to embarrass and discredit the government via its followers who had infiltrated the army and judiciary and portray Turkey as a supplier of arms to terrorist groups in Syria. In a separate but linked case, an Istanbul court in 2016 convicted the staff of a newspaper who ran a report claiming Turkey was supplying guns to terrorists through MİT. The two were charged with espionage and aiding a terrorist group and were arrested in late November 2015. They were held in prison until Feb. 26, 2016, when the Constitutional Court ruled that their rights had been violated and ordered their release. One of them was later acquitted, while the other, Can Dündar, was convicted and remains a fugitive.
