An open letter signed by 19 of the 'richest 1/10 of the richest 1% of Americans' calls for the creation a wealth tax on them and their peers.

The Left-wing financier George Soros, Facebook co-founder Chris Hughes and heiress Abigail Disney are among signatories.

The move has been met with shock and condemnation. Conservatives said the billionaires could simply write a big check to the taxman without the need for any new legislation.

'A wealth tax could help address the climate crisis, improve the economy, improve health outcomes, fairly create opportunity, and strengthen our democratic freedoms.

'Instituting a wealth tax is in the interest of our republic.'

Describing the proposed wealth tax as 'patriotic', the letter continues: 'In our republic, it is the patriotic duty of all Americans to contribute what they can to the success of the country, and the wealthiest are no exception.

New Soros/Koch-Funded Think Tank Claims To Oppose US Forever War

A new Boston Globe article titled “In an astonishing turn, George Soros and Charles Koch team up to end US ‘forever war’ policy” reports that the two influential billionaires have chipped in a half a million dollars apiece to start a new DC think tank with the goal of doing the exact opposite of the sort of thing that billionaire-funded DC think tanks normally do.

“Besides being billionaires and spending much of their fortunes to promote pet causes, the leftist financier George Soros and the right-wing Koch brothers have little in common,” the report begins.

“They could be seen as polar opposites. Soros is an old-fashioned New Deal liberal. The Koch brothers are fire-breathing right-wingers who dream of cutting taxes and dismantling government. Now they have found something to agree on: the United States must end its ‘forever war’ and adopt an entirely new foreign policy.”

“In concrete terms, this means the Quincy Institute will likely advocate a withdrawal of American troops from Afghanistan and Syria; a return to the nuclear deal with Iran; less confrontational approaches to Russia and China; an end to regime-change campaigns against Venezuela and Cuba; and sharp reductions in the defense budget,” the article reads.

Warren Buffett to donate $3.6 billion of stock to Gates Foundation, other charities

Warren Buffett is set to donate $3.6 billion in shares to five foundations including the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, the Wall Street Journal reported Monday.

Berkshire Hathaway, the conglomerate Buffett chairs, will reportedly give 16.8 million Class B stock to the Gates Foundation, Susan Thompson Buffett Foundation, Sherwood Foundation, Howard G. Buffett Foundation and NoVo Foundation.

Buffett, 88, has pledged to give 85 percent of his stake in Berkshire Hathaway to the five foundations.

He has reportedly donated about 45 percent of his 2006 holdings to date to the five foundations. The gifts are collectively valued at around $34 billion, according to the company.

Judge bars Trump from using $2.5B in military funding to build border wall

OAKLAND, Calif. — A federal judge on Friday prohibited President Donald Trump from tapping $2.5 billion in military funding to build high-priority segments of his prized border wall in California, Arizona and New Mexico.

Judge Haywood S. Gilliam Jr. in Oakland acted in two lawsuits filed by California and by activists who contended that the money transfer was unlawful and that building the wall would pose environmental threats.

"All President Trump has succeeded in building is a constitutional crisis, threatening immediate harm to our state," said California Attorney General Xavier Becerra, who led a 20-state coalition of attorneys general in one lawsuit.

The American Civil Liberties Union, which sued on behalf of Sierra Club and Southern Border Communities Coalition, praised the decision.

"This decision upholds the basic principle that the president has no power to spend taxpayer money without Congress' approval," said ACLU staff attorney Dror Ladin. "We will continue to defend this core principle of our democracy."
