Jeffrey Epstein victims not silenced by NDAs, attorney says
"As the attorneys representing Epstein's victims, we specifically did not allow for the inclusion of NDAs in any of the civil settlements because we refused to allow Epstein to buy control over his victims."
Epstein committed sexual crimes against dozens of teenagers who were lured to his house under the guise of being paid hundreds of dollars to give him a massage. The Palm Beach Police Department thoroughly investigated the case and discovered that Epstein was molesting the children, some as young as 14 years old. When then-State Attorney Barry Krischer decided he was not going to prosecute the billionaire for his crimes against children, Palm Beach Police Chief Michael Reiter sent the case to the FBI and U.S. Attorney's Office. The criminal investigation ended when the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Southern District of Florida, then lead by current U.S. Secretary of Labor Alex Acosta, entered into a Non-Prosecution Agreement with Epstein, through which Epstein was essentially granted federal immunity from the sex crimes he had committed so long as he pleaded guilty to a few state crimes. Epstein pleaded guilty to two state felonies in June 2008 and was sentenced to 18 months in jail. Two of Epstein's victims, represented by Paul Cassell and me, then sued the U.S. Attorney's Office for secretly entering into the Non-Prosecution Agreement with Epstein in violation of their rights under the Crime Victims' Rights Act. That action remains pending 11 years later.
