Antifa Plots Acid Attack At DC Free Speech Rally

A left-wing agitator using the artwork and a pseudonym associated with a Rolling Stone and Playboy journalist has made serious threats to use muriatic acid for attacks conservatives at the upcoming Demand Free Speech rally on July 6 in Washington DC, according to Big League Politics.

"I just want to toss as many balloons of Muriatic acid in the faces as many Proud Boys I can [sic]," wrote the user "POUND ON YOUR BOY" on a popular right-wing Telegram channel, prompting event co-organizer Enrique Tarrio to contact the FBI and DHS, who will now assist with security at the event. "I just want to blind as many of you cock suckers are possible [sic]," said the user, adding "We already have the Muriatic acid, wax, and balloons."

Tarrio told BLP that the threat is particularly dangerous due to the use of wax. Muriatic acid can be purchased in virtually any pool store or home improvement store, and is already dangerous on its own with the ability to cause minor burns, but can quickly be washed off with water. By combining the muriatic acid with wax, it will immediately form a film similar to candle wax on the injured person’s skin. Tarrio explains that this could allow the burn to become severe, and even lead to the wax and acid entering the injured person’s blood stream and causing cardiac arrest.

"It starts with milk shakes, then it escalates to what happened to Andy Ngo" said Tarrio - referring to the conservative journalist who was brutally attacked during a demonstration in Portland, Oregon last weekend. "and now they’re threatening us with acid attacks," Tarrio continued. "All because we want to defend free speech in Washington, D.C." "We will not be intimidated with these tactics of fear and fascism. We will celebrate our First Amendment without apology."

Who is POUND ON YOUR BOY? Both the phrase and artwork associated with the name "POUND ON YOUR BOY" were created by Rolling Stone and Playboy journalist Fagan Kuhnmuench, who according to Big League Politics, has written extensively in support of Antifa. Kuhnmuench told Big League Politics via Twitter DM that he didn't make the threats over Telegram, and that he doesn't have a Telegram account. And while he encouraged people to use his art, Kuhnmuench had no explanation for why someone would use his pseudonym.

It's No Bitcoin: Facebook's Libra Currency Is Tied to Government Currencies

Nobel laureate F.A. Hayek was, as he says in the 1990 introduction to his Denationalization of Money: The Argument Refined, one of the chief “gold bugs” of the 20th century. And he reminded us, so long as politicians want to control money, gold-backed currency is essential to protect our liberty from the politics of inflation.

But his concern for money and market reached back to his earlier work, as noted in a number of articles posted in recent years at mises.org. As noted by Nikolay Gertchev: In a series of five lectures delivered in 1937, and published under the title Monetary Nationalism and International Stability, Hayek offers an in-depth analysis of the main deficiencies of the present-day monetary system. In a nutshell, he identifies two factors that disrupt international economic relations: the fractional reserve commercial banks and the national central banks. The former are the primary source for the international transmission of the business cycles, while the attempts of the latter to correct the imbalances de facto amplify the resulting instability.

And Demelza Hays writes: In 1975 Hayek eventually gave a lecture entitled “Choice of Currency,” in which he articulated for the first time the provocative demand that the state monopoly on money should be repealed. The publication of the monographs Free Choice in Currency and The Denationalization of Money followed a year later, in which he expanded in greater detail on his ideas on competition between private money issuers. … What shape would an order reflecting these power-sharing principles take, and how could it emerge? Hayek argues that such an order would take shape if the following liberties were granted: Private money producers would be free to issue money and enter into currency competition. Citizens would be free to choose which currencies they want to use.

Fast forward nearly a half century and Hayek’s call for the denationalization of money seems to be a real possibility, not just a crank libertarian position safely ignored by the monetary authorities. The coming of the block chain technology and cryptocurrencies certainly suggest that the original post-World War II Bretton Woods “settlement” of the status of money, that gold and US dollars, redeemable in gold, were the basis for international settlements, failed. As have later revisions of the idea. Thus, an era of monetary uncertainty may give rise to possibilities for market-oriented reforms. Bitcoin, as an example of “virtual gold,” gains its value from the limited number of units of that cryptocurrency and the expense in “mining” more of those units, not unlike real gold. While Bitcoin is the best known of the cryptocurrencies, CoinMarketCap.com lists over a thousand crypto currencies that are traded (though a significant percentage of these are actually ICOs — Initial Crypto Offerings — a way to raise funds for a particular project). Much of the power of the cryptos is that they can be easily, and privately, bought, sold, and exchanged.

Hayek predicted that normal market forces would apply to the goods we use to facilitate exchange (“currencies”) if only governments would get out of the way. In a free market for money he suggested that major financial institutions would sponsor competing currencies, probably defined by “baskets” of commodities. He speculates on how the market would maintain the value and stability of such currencies, far better than any political system of legal tender. To some degree, this seems to be happening with cryptocurrencies.

And then along comes the 900 pound gorilla. Facebook, with two billion users, has decided to enter the cryptocurrency market with its Libra coin. Since the Libra would be usable as a currency on Facebook itself, the company probably has calculated that it will have a strong competitive advantage over any of the competing currencies. Ah, but … and here is the rub, the Libra is not a naturally limited good, as Bitcoin is, but can be multiplied to infinity. It is not stabilized by reference to a basket of commodities as Hayek recommended. Rather, it will be defined by a changeable basket of fiat currencies!

Iran amasses more enriched uranium than allowed by nuclear deal

DUBAI/VIENNA (Reuters) - Iran announced on Monday it had amassed more low-enriched uranium than permitted under its 2015 deal with major powers, its first major step in violation of the deal since the United States pulled out of it more than a year ago. The U.N. nuclear watchdog, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), which monitors Iran’s nuclear program under the deal, confirmed in Vienna that Tehran had breached the limit.

The step could have far-reaching consequences for diplomacy at a time when European countries are trying to pull the United States and Iran back from the brink of war, less than two weeks after Washington aborted air strikes at the last minute. The Europeans, who opposed last year’s decision by President Donald Trump to abandon the nuclear deal signed under his predecessor Barack Obama, had pleaded with Iran to keep within its parameters.

Iran has said it aims to do so but cannot do so indefinitely, as long as sanctions imposed by Trump have deprived it of the benefits it was meant to receive in return for accepting curbs on its nuclear program under the deal. Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif said Iran had passed the threshold, exactly as it had warned it would: “We have said very transparently what we will do.”

The move is a test of European diplomacy after French, British and German officials had promised a strong diplomatic response if Iran fundamentally breached the deal. Prime Minister Theresa May’s office said Britain was urgently considering its next moves along with its partners, and urged Iran to “reverse this step”. Her foreign secretary, Jeremy Hunt, said he was “deeply worried” by Iran’s announcement. A European diplomat told Reuters there was a mechanism under the agreement to deal with “any inconsistencies”, and it would be up to a joint commission of signatories to decide next steps.

“ECONOMIC WAR” Iran announced in May that it would speed up production of enriched uranium in response to the Trump administration sharply tightening sanctions against it that month. Washington has now effectively ordered all countries to halt purchases of Iranian oil or face sanctions of their own, which Tehran calls “economic war” designed to starve its population. In the two months since the U.S. sanctions were tightened, the confrontation has taken on a military dimension, with Washington blaming Tehran for attacks on oil tankers in the Gulf region, and Iran shooting down a U.S. drone. Trump ordered air strikes in retaliation, only to call them off minutes before impact.

The nuclear deal imposes limits both on how much enriched uranium Iran can hold and on how pure its stocks can be, a pair of related thresholds intended to keep Tehran from amassing enough material, in a sufficiently refined state, to make a nuclear bomb. Zarif said Iran’s next move would be to enrich uranium slightly beyond the 3.67% maximum purity allowed under the deal, a threshold Tehran has previously said it would cross on July 7. That could be seen as a bigger breach than Monday’s announcement that it holds too much material at a permissible purity.

European officials had held last-ditch talks with Iranian envoys last week in the hope of persuading Tehran not to breach either threshold. Those talks failed, with the Iranians saying European efforts to shield the Islamic Republic from the impact of U.S. sanctions were insufficient.

Walmart to invest $1.2 billion in China to upgrade logistics

BEIJING (Reuters) - Walmart Inc (WMT.N) plans to invest 8 billion yuan ($1.2 billion) in China over the next 10 years to upgrade logistics, the U.S. retail giant said on its social media account on Monday. The company will also set up or renovate more than 10 logistics centers in the country. The comments followed a meeting between President Donald Trump and his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping over the weekend in Osaka, Japan that rekindled hope for a U.S.-China trade deal.

Walmart has been pushing to integrate its retail network in China with the country’s burgeoning “smart retail” movement, as retailers and tech giants such as Alibaba Group Holding Ltd and Tencent Holdings Ltd cut deals to combine online and high-street shopping. In China, the company last year opened its first small high-tech supermarket, where smartphones can be used to pay for items that are mostly available on the U.S. retailer’s store on online platform JD Daojia, an affiliate of JD.com Inc.

Walmart operates a number of formats in China, including hypermarket, Sam’s Club and Walmart supermarket, with 400 retail units covering more than 180 cities nationwide. Last month, French retailer Carrefour agreed to sell 80% of its Chinese operations to electronics retailer Suning.com for 620 million euros.

El Salvador leader takes blame for death of man, girl at U.S. border

July 1 (UPI) – El Salvador President Nayib Bukele on Monday took responsibility for the drowning deaths of a man and his young daughter, whose deaths were captured in a photo at the U.S.-Mexico border last week that drew widespread outcry. The photo of Oscar Martinez and his toddler daughter Valeria on the bank of the Rio Grande renewed debate about U.S. immigration policies.

"We can blame any other country but what about our blame? What country did they flee? Did they flee the United States? They fled El Salvador, they fled our country. It is our fault," Bukele told BBC News. "People don't flee their homes because they want to. People flee their homes because they feel they have to."

Martinez's wife, Tania Vannesa Alvos, said the pair were planning to cross the river into Brownsville, Texas, when the current swept them away. She said they'd received a humanitarian visa and planned to request political asylum in the United States. Bukele, elected in February, said he doesn't approve of the Trump administration's treatment of immigrants, but emphasized his nation would be better served to improve domestic problems so citizens want to stay in El Salvador.

"I think migration is a right, but it should be an option, not an obligation," he said, adding that many leave to escape violence and poverty. "Right now it's an obligation for a lot of people." Bukele told Sky News U.S. efforts to block Latin American migrants won't work. "They are approaching this in the wrong way," Bukele said. "History has shown that this will not stop migration. What I would say to the U.S. government is we are ready to work on security and providing jobs for our people."

KERNS: Antifa Has Shown Why It Should Be Designated A Domestic Terror Group

The Federal Bureau of Investigation defines domestic terrorism as violence perpetrated by groups with “extremist ideologies of a political, religious, social, racial, or environmental nature.” Antifa meets that definition. The group consists of American citizens radicalized by left-wing ideology who carry out threats of violence. It’s high time to classify Antifa as a domestic terror organization.

Over the weekend, the group exploded in rage once again in Portland, Oregon. Antifa members injured several people, including an elderly man. Journalist Andy Ngo, who was covering the event, went to the hospital for a head injury and brain bleeding. To date, federal officials have not classified Antifa a domestic terror group despite endless photographs, eyewitness accounts and video evidence supporting the designation. During a protest of conservative speaker Ben Shapiro last year on the University of California’s Berkeley campus, Antifa members reportedly destroyed campus property, set fire to trash cans, beat up college Republicans and forced students to shelter in place. (Campus police stood by doing nothing.) The school settled the case, paying organizers nearly $100,000.

It’s difficult to understand why the group hasn’t received a terror designation. President Trump has said that the gang MS-13 could be called a domestic terror organization for their activity in the country to harm citizens and traffic drugs. In 2017, then-Attorney General Jeff Sessions told Fox News host Tucker Carlson, “We’re not going to allow them to take over a block, or a corner of our communities, and terrorize people with this violence.” Antifa, unlike MS-13, does have a stated political philosophy, and directs its violence specifically at Republicans.

In 2001, the left-wing environmental group Earth Liberation Front was designated a domestic terror organization. The group claimed credit for setting fire to new condominiums in San Diego in 2003, because it opposed new construction. They scrawled the initials “ELF” on the walls before they set fire to the units. The left-wing terror group also torched SUVs at car dealerships in Southern California and burned down what they called “McMansions,” or large homes, in states including Washington. Unlike Antifa’s actions in Portland, no one was actually injured in ELF’s fires.

The Weather Underground is another group classified as a domestic terror organization. Like Antifa, the cabal of violent youth sought to effect political change with thuggery. But unlike Antifa, the Weather Underground never seriously injured anyone. They planted a couple dozen bombs to impact law enforcement and elected leaders, but no one was ever hit by a bomb in the way that Antifa hit Ngo. It seems that Antifa ought to at least enjoy parity with the Weather Underground. Another FBI-designated terror group, Fuerzas Armadas de Liberacion (FALN), was responsible for terrorizing New Yorkers in a political effort to gain independence for Puerto Rico. The 1970s militant group held Marxist-Leninist political views and sought to turn Puerto Rico into a communist province. The group took credit for bombings that killed four people. In 1999, as one of his final acts in office, President Clinton granted clemency to 16 of the terror group’s members.

If a domestic terror designation was enough for these groups — some of which never injured anyone — Antifa ought to get the classification. Antifa has injured people at their protests and events. “Antifa is an organization that actively promotes and engages in violence, and its members have been allowed to continually attack and injure scores of people for political purposes. That is the very definition of terrorism,” said Lt. Randy Sutton (ret.), a 33-year police veteran and founder of The Wounded Blue organization. “It is time to treat them as what they are: a domestic terror organization.” As the old saying goes, “Money is the mother’s milk of politics.” Anyone who understands political protests — from the Occupy Wall Street movement on the left to the Tea Party movement on the right — understands that organizing does not occur without significant funding. To that end, someone is providing cash flow to a terroristic organization. With a domestic terror designation, federal authorities could investigate who funds Antifa’s violent crime. They could also choke off that funding.

FACT CHECK: Viral Image Claims To Show The KKK Marching At The 1924 Democratic National Convention

An image shared on Facebook purportedly shows a parade of Ku Klux Klan (KKK) members at the 1924 Democratic National Convention.

Verdict: False The image captures a KKK march toward the funeral of a slain police officer on Dec. 2, 1924.

Fact Check: “This photo was taken at the 1924 Democratic National Convention,” the caption reads. “It was known as the ‘Klanbake’ (just in case you want to Google it).”

The 1924 Democratic National Convention, which took 16 days and 103 ballots to select the presidential nominee, was held in New York City from June 24 to July 9 that year. It has been popularly described as a “Klanbake” for a couple of decades, according to research by journalist Jennifer Mendelsohn and academic Peter Shulman, who traced the origin of the term back to a contemporaneous report on the convention from the New York Daily News. According to JSTOR Daily, hundreds of KKK members attended as delegates.

The image has been misidentified as Klansmen marching at the convention, but it was actually taken about five months later in Madison, Wisconsin, by Wisconsin State Journal photographer Arthur M. Vinje. It shows a parade of Klansmen en route to the funeral of a slain police officer in December of that year.

“Ku Klux Klan (KKK) wearing conic masks and white robes parading down King Street to Schroeder Funeral Home for the funeral of Police officer Herbert Dreger,” reads the caption on the Wisconsin Historical Society’s website. “Dreger was shot to death in ‘Death’s Corner’ (South Murray Street) on December 2, 1924.”

In the past few years, conservatives have deployed the image in an attempt to discredit Democrats. Conservative political commentator Dinesh D’Souza, for example, tweeted the image in 2017. Shulman subsequently corrected him, pointing to the historical society website.
