A federal judge put a last-minute block on the Trump administration’s rule forcing drug companies to include prices in television ads Monday night.

Judge Amit Mehta ruled that the Department of Health and Human Services did not have the authority to make the rule. His decision rolled in just hours before the rule was set to go into effect, reported Stat News. The drug companies said the rule encroached on their free speech, but Mehta did not address that topic.

“To be sure, the costs imposed by the … Rule amount to a rounding error for the pharmaceutical industry,” Obama appointee Mehta wrote in his ruling, according to Stat News. “But that argument misses the point. It is the agency’s incursion into a brand-new regulatory environment, and the rationale for it, that make the Rule so consequential.”

Donald Trump has dramatically stepped up the war of words over Britain’s US ambassador, branding him a “pompous fool”.

In his latest explosive tweets, the president complained that Sir Kim Darroch was a “very stupid guy” who had been foisted on the US.

He also again attacked Theresa May over Brexit, accusing her of ignoring his advice and “going her own foolish way”.

Turkey seeks arrests of more than 200 soldiers for failed 2016 coup

July 9 (UPI) – Turkish prosecutors on Tuesday issued arrest warrants for more than 200 soldiers stemming from the failed military coup three years ago.

Officials said the warrants were given for troops in Istanbul and Aegean Izmir province for connections to the Fetullah Terrorist Organization (FETO), which Turkish officials have blamed for the failed 2016 overthrow attempt against President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

Colonels, lieutenants, majors and captains were among the 176 active soldiers covered in the warrants. Authorities said the arrests are part of an investigation into FETO infiltration of Turkey's armed forces.

Turkey has blamed FETO leader Fetullah Gulen, who lives in the United States, for organizing the attempted coup in July 2016. More than 250 people died and 2,200 were injured in fighting during the grab for power.

American scientist Suzanne Eaton found dead in Greece after going missing

WESTCHESTER COUNTY, N.Y. - An American scientist who went missing six days ago was found dead in Greece on Monday, her German employer said.

Suzanne Eaton, 59, had been on the Greek island of Crete for a work conference and was reported missing on July 2, according to the Max Planck Institute of Molecular Cell Biology and Genetics in Germany, where she worked as a researcher and as a professor at the Biotechnology Center of the TU Dresden.

Eaton's body was found by police on Monday night, the institute said on its website. There was no immediate word on the cause of death.

"It is with enormous sadness and regret that we announce the tragic demise of our dearest friend and colleague, Suzanne Eaton," the institute said, adding that authorities are investigating. "We are deeply shocked and disturbed by this tragic event.

Prominent Detroit priest removed from pulpit

DETROIT (AP) — The Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Detroit said Sunday that it removed a prominent priest from public ministry after reviewing what it described as a “credible allegation” that he had sexually abused a child decades ago.

The Rev. Eduard Perrone was suspended from ministry Friday, a month after The Associated Press began asking the pastor himself, the archdiocese and law enforcement authorities about a former altar boy’s allegations that Perrone had groped him.

Archdiocese officials told Perrone’s congregation at Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary Parish during services Sunday that members of the local archdiocese review board found a “semblance of truth” to the accusations, but that they are maintaining a presumption of innocence.

Some parishioners expressed shock when they heard, and one woman walked out of the service to gather herself outside. After Mass, a number of people stopped at the back of the church to ask questions of two archdiocesan officials and pick up a written statement about Perrone.

The pastor is prohibited from representing himself as a priest or wearing clerical attire while the Vatican reviews the allegations, the archdiocese said in the written statement.

‘This Isn’t a Game’: Four Women Sue Indiana Attorney General Curtis Hill for Sexual Harassment

The statehouse staffers say they want their alleged harasser to be held accountable after investigations found their claims to be ‘credible’ but went no further.

Indiana State Rep. Mara Candelaria Reardon hasn’t spoken to her state’s attorney general, Curtis Hill, since the night he allegedly grabbed her ass.

“I want him to know how profoundly he’s affected all of our lives,” Reardon, a Democrat, told The Daily Beast through tears on Monday. “This isn’t a game.”

And so she is suing.

Reardon and three other named statehouse employees filed a new federal lawsuit against Hill on Tuesday morning. The 11-count complaint against Hill and the state of Indiana alleges sexual harassment, retaliation, gender discrimination, battery, defamation, and invasion of privacy, according to a draft viewed Monday evening by The Daily Beast.

Over a thousand evacuated as Spanish aquarium goes up in flames (PHOTOS, VIDEO)

More than 1,600 visitors and 350 staff were evacuated after a fire broke out at Europe’s largest aquarium in Valencia, Spain. A column of dense black smoke rose from the building.

The blaze was reported at about 11.00 Am local time, as visitors reportedly noticed smoke near a shark enclosure. Almost 2,000 people were soon evacuated, as a plume of smoke erupted from the building.

Photos and videos shared on social media captured the extent of the fire.

Top immigration official says ICE is ready to deport 1 million undocumented immigrants

The Trump administration's top official at U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) said immigration authorities are ready to identify, detain and eventually deport approximately one million undocumented immigrants with pending removal orders.

"They're ready to just perform their mission, which is to go and find and detain and then deport the approximately one million people who have final removal orders," Acting USCIS Director Ken Cuccinelli said on "Face the Nation" on Sunday, referring to Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) branch charged with removal operations.

Cuccinelli, an immigration hardliner who took the helm of the agency last month, said it is within ICE's discretion to determine who among those with final orders of deportation will be targeted in operations, suggesting the full pool of approximately one million immigrants might not face deportation after all.

"They've been all the way through the due process and have final removal orders. Who among those will be targeted for this particular effort … is really just information kept within ICE at this point," he added. "The pool of those with final removal orders is enormous."

Britain’s seizure of Iranian tanker won’t go ‘unanswered,’ army chief says

The seizure of an Iranian oil tanker off Gibraltar by British Royal Marines last week will not go “unanswered,” the chief of staff of Iran’s armed forces has said.

“Capture of the Iranian oil tanker based on fabricated excuses…will not be unanswered and when necessary Tehran will give appropriate answer,” Major General Mohammad Baqeri was quoted by the semiofficial Tasnim news agency as saying on July 9.

Royal Marines boarded the supertanker Grace 1 off the coast of Gibraltar on July 4 and seized it over accusations it was breaking sanctions by taking oil to Syria.

Iran has demanded the immediate release of the oil tanker, while an Iranian Revolutionary Guards commander threatened on July 5 to seize a British ship in retaliation.

Less than 1% participate in New Zealand gun buyback

ust one percent of New Zealand’s guns have been turned in after the nation’s ban on semi-automatic rifles and high-capacity magazines.

Approximately 700 guns have been turned in so far, an amount estimated between 0.05 and 0.06 percent, based on officials’ earlier estimates of 1.2 million to 1.5 million total guns of all types in the country, The Washington Post reported.

Official data has not yet been released and is complex to even obtain due to the fact that many of the banned weapons are not on the national registry.

The New Zealand government has sent notices to owners of all registered firearms informing them of their obligation to turn in their firearm. An amnesty period lasts until December 20, and after that, gun owners will face consequences for being in possession of banned firearms.

The buyback program was implemented in April when the New Zealand parliament approved a ban on semi-automatic rifles and high-capacity magazines.

Kleptocrats, fraudsters and crooks steal hundreds of billions of pounds, dollars and euros from the rest of us every year, but that gives them a problem: how can they stop the rest of us knowing what they’ve done with the proceeds? They have to stop their haul looking suspicious, to cleanse it of any criminal taint, or face losing their hard-stolen cash.

Money laundering, as this process is known, is notoriously difficult to uncover, investigate and prosecute. Occasionally, however, an insider breaks cover – someone such as Howard Wilkinson, who blew the whistle on perhaps the largest money-laundering scheme in history, the movement of €200bn of suspect funds through the Estonian branch of Denmark’s biggest bank between 2007 and 2015, most of it earned in the dodgier corners of the former Soviet Union, some perhaps belonging to Vladimir Putin himself.

“No one really knows where this money went,” Wilkinson, a former Danske Bank employee, told Denmark’s parliament last year. Once the money had got into the global financial system, “it was clean, it was free.”

Britain’s most famous money launderer is HSBC, thanks to its systematic cleansing of the earnings of the Latin American drug cartels over the second half of the last decade, for which it was fined $1.9bn by the US government in 2012. But that was a tiny operation compared to the Danske Bank scandal. If gathered together, the suspect funds moved through the bank’s Estonian outpost could buy HSBC, with more than enough left over to buy Danske Bank too.

Agents with the Federal Bureau of Investigation and Immigration and Customs Enforcement have turned state driver’s license databases into a facial-recognition gold mine, scanning through hundreds of millions of Americans’ photos without their knowledge or consent, newly released documents show.

Thousands of facial-recognition requests, internal documents, and e-mails over the past five years, obtained through public-records requests by Georgetown University researchers and provided to The Washington Post, reveal that federal investigators have turned state Department of Motor Vehicles databases into the bedrock of an unprecedented surveillance infrastructure.

Police have long had access to fingerprints, DNA, and other ‘‘biometric data’’ taken from criminal suspects. But the DMV records contain the photos of the majority of a state’s residents, most of whom have never been charged with a crime.

Neither Congress nor state legislatures have authorized the development of such a system, and growing numbers of Democratic and Republican lawmakers are criticizing the technology as a dangerous, pervasive, and error-prone surveillance tool.

No bump stocks have been turned in to Denver police after ban

DENVER (AP) — No bump stocks have been turned over to Denver authorities after the city banned the accessories used in last year’s mass shooting in Las Vegas that killed 58 people and injured hundreds.

Denver Police police last month invited city residents to turn in any bump stocks in their possession but Denverite reports that none have been handed over.

The ban on bump stocks approved by the city council in January was considered largely symbolic. Denver had previously banned the types of semi-automatic rifles that can be modified with bump stocks.

The council also made it illegal in most situations to possess magazines that hold more than 15 rounds of ammunition.

The top 50 global banks allegedly involved in a $21 billion Russian money-laundering scheme

Between 2010 and 2014, at least $20.8 billion was laundered out of Russia, funneled into banks in Moldova and Latvia, and spread from there into 96 countries across the world. The Organized Crime and Corruption Reporting Project (OCCRP), which unearthed the scheme in 2014, dubbed it “the Russian Laundromat.”

Its main beneficiaries haven’t been named (though former Moldovan MP Vyacheslav Platon has been arrested for allegedly orchestrating it). But now The Guardian and other outlets are reporting that a lot—an awful lot—of international banks ended up as hosts for the money, despite their anti-money-laundering controls. The data, the Guardian says, come from evidence collected in a police investigation and provided by the OCCRP.
