China yet to meet Donald Trump’s demand to purchase more farm goods as US-China trade crumbles

Despite the demand by US President Donald Trump that China buy more American agricultural products, new numbers released on Friday show that Beijing is not seeking to address the issue.

Trump took to Twitter on Thursday to say that China had been “letting us down” by not buying US farm goods, which he claimed China’s President Xi Jinping promised to do at their summit meeting at the G20 at the end of June.

Such purchases have become a critical bone of contention in the bilateral trading relationship. A year ago, a large-scale purchase of soybeans, pork or grains seemed to be the easiest “win” for either side in the trade war, since it would help reduce the large US trade deficit with China, while allowing Beijing to divert focus from the structural changes in its economy that Washington was demanding, such as reform of state-owned enterprises.

President Donald Trump said Thursday that big tech companies must not be allowed to censor the voices of the American people on social media, even as he hailed conservative critics for using the platforms to get around the "fake news filter."

Trump has weaponized social media to eviscerate opponents and promote himself. He convened Thursday's White House "social media summit" of like-minded critics of Big Tech, excluding representatives from the very platforms he exploits.

Earlier Thursday, Trump sent a stream of Twitter messages lashing out at social media companies and the press, familiar targets that resonate with his conservative base.

The meeting represented an escalation of Trump's battle with companies like Facebook, Google and even his preferred communications outlet, Twitter. The president has claimed, without evidence, that the companies are "against me" and even suggested U.S. regulators should sue them on grounds of anti-conservative bias.

Ex minister in Norwegian government jailed for sex abuse of male asylum seekers

A former Norwegian government minister has been sentenced to five years in jail for sexually abusing three asylum seekers over several years, prosecutors said.

Svein Ludvigsen, 72, a former fisheries minister, was convicted of abusing his position as county governor and exploiting the vulnerable situations of three young men, one of whom has a mild mental disability.

The sentence was handed down on Wednesday but made public a day later.

The abuse of the men, now aged between 25 and 34, occurred between 2011 and 2017, according to court documents seen by AFP.

Victims told the court that Ludvigsen, who is now retired, had offered them housing and jobs in exchange for sexual favours.

Two of the three men had also been concerned that their residency permits could have been withdrawn if they didn’t comply.

BNP Paribas linked to controversial American detention centres

French Bank BNP Paribas – of which the Belgian State is one of the most important shareholders – has been found to have intense commercial relations with the GEO Group, one of the biggest players in migrant incarceration in the USA, De Standaard revealed on Thursday.

American migrant detention centres are run by the private sector and handled mainly by two players: GEO Group and CoreCivic.

Documents submitted to the financial regulator Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) show that BNP Paribas has done business with GEO for several years.

The bank is particularly closely involved in various GEO Group bond issues. In addition, a bank subsidiary, BNP Paribas Arbitrage, had holdings, in the first quarter of the year, of some 853,000 USD worth of GEO Group shares. BNP Paribas is also mentioned as a lender in GEO annual reports in 2010, 2012 and 2014.
