Watsonville Man Believed To Have Died In Stolen Plane Crash
A Watsonville man reported missing on July 1 is believed to have died after stealing a plane from the Watsonville Municipal Airport and crashing it off the Santa Cruz coast two weeks ago, police reported Thursday.
Hugo Mar, 64, was an active member of the Santa Cruz Flying Club based at the airport. The Cessna 172 Skyhawk had been leased out to the club but Mar hadn't made a reservation to fly it, according to police and the flying club.
The club said Mar was in good standing and had paid his dues for June, and police said Mar had attempted to reserve the plane but was denied the day the plane was stolen.
A preliminary investigation by the FAA on June 27 determined that the plane crashed and was destroyed off the coast of the Santa Cruz mountains, and Mar was the only person on the plane. Radar data from the military pinpointed the crash to about 3.3 miles off the coast, according to the flying club.
Mar's LinkedIn account said he was a physician assistant at medical clinic in Watsonville, and social media users remembered him as a "great doctor." He posed with a small airplane in his profile photo.
In his profile description, he referred to LIGA International, the Flying Doctors of Mercy, a non-profit organization that flies doctors and healthcare professionals to patients living in villages in Mexico.
"Flying with the doctors of mercy is a talent God gave me," his description said.
The flying club said Mar did not make any radio calls while he was on the airplane, and the U.S. Coast Guard was unable to recover any wreckage from the crash.
Police are asking anyone with information about Mar or the plane theft to contact Detective Trevor Ihlen at (831) 768-3321.
