Iran claims it has captured British tanker

Amid heightened tension in the region, a British-flagged oil tanker was reportedly seized by Iran. Iran's Revolutionary Guards claim that they seized a British oil taker, the Stena Impero, on Friday. The ship's owners said in a statement that it had been “approached by unidentified small crafts and a helicopter during transit of the Strait of Hormuz while the vessel was in international waters.” The 30,000-ton ship bound for Saudi Arabia abruptly veered off course and into Iranian waters according to tracking data.

The British government said it was assessing the situation following the reports. The news comes a day after the U.S. says it “destroyed” an Iranian drone.

Head of the Coalition of African-American Pastors urges Nike to cut ties with Colin Kaepernick

Rev. Bill Owens, a former Memphis pastor who heads the socially conservative Coalition of African-American Pastors is urging Nike to end its relationship with former NFL player Colin Kaepernick over his criticism of the Betsy Ross flag. Owens penned a petition directed at Nike CEO Mark Parker making it clear that the former San Francisco 49ers quarterback’s views do not represent his organization's views and that Kaepernick “has become synonymous with radical anti-American sentiment.”

“We represent a variety of races, ethnicities, and creeds. And we agree that Mr. Kaepernick’s views on America and the flag are fringe opinions, not shared by any of us … especially the African Americans who marched against segregation with Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr,” the letter reads. “In fact, we find Mr. Kaepernick’s views to be ill-informed and offensive, especially to veterans and others who have served this country.” Owens also urged Nike to “make amends to veterans” by going forward with a select run of Betsy Ross sneakers. Kaepernick, who is the face of an advertising campaign by the company, created backlash when Nike stopped selling sneakers featuring a version of the Betsy Ross American flag after he reportedly complained to the company that the flag was flown when slavery was legal.
