GOP investigators seek Nellie Ohr's research for Fusion GPS on Trump family

Nellie Ohr, the wife of Justice Department official Bruce Ohr, is under scrutiny again. GOP lawmakers seek Ohr's opposition research on members of the Trump family, according to Fox News. In testimony to lawmakers late last year, Ohr said she gathered information during the 2016 campaign about President Trump, his wife Melania Trump, and his children for Fusion GPS, the same opposition research firm that was paid by the Democratic National Committee and the Hillary Clinton campaign for British ex-spy Christopher Steele's anti-Trump dossier. Ohr testified in December that she was tasked with researching the Trump family "broadly in connection with any – any Russian connections." She said she investigated family members' foreign travel, but claimed her research lacked "depth," and claimed her goal was to "see whether they were involved in dealings and transactions with people who had suspicious pasts, or suspicious types of dealings.” At the time, Ohr said she was still in possession of her research and indicated she might be willing to share it with the committee. Fox News reached out to her lawyer with questions about the records. A response has not yet been published.

Ohr's husband Bruce is believed to have acted as an unofficial back channel between the FBI and Steele. He was demoted when it was revealed he met with Steele and Glenn Simpson, the co-founder of Fusion GPS. Steele's dossier, which contained unverified claims about Trump's ties to Russia, has been a subject of concern for GOP lawmakers, particularly for how it was used by the FBI in Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act warrant applications to gain the authority to spy on onetime Trump campaign adviser Carter Page. Both Ohrs testified last year to a joint task force of the House Oversight and Judiciary committees that were investigating decisions made by the Justice Department and FBI surrounding the 2016 election. In his congressional testimony, Bruce Ohr also told lawmakers his wife shared a thumb drive with him to hand over to the FBI. Nellie Ohr also testified that she met with Steele the day before the FBI launched its Trump-Russia investigation at a hotel in Washington, D.C.

Rep. Mark Meadows, a Republican from North Carolina, sent a criminal referral addressed to Attorney General William Barr earlier this year, citing concerns that Nellie Ohr "knowingly provided false testimony" to lawmakers. Barr is overseeing a review, led by U.S. Attorney John Durham, of the origins of the Russia investigation.

Defense intel chief says Iran doesn't want war despite tanker seizures in Strait of Hormuz

The military's intelligence chief said Iran does not want war with the U.S. despite its seizure of British tankers in the Strait of Hormuz, escalating tensions in the region. Iranian forces reportedly seized at least two vessels affiliated with the U.K. in the strait on Friday, just hours before Army Lt. Gen. Robert Ashley, the head of the Defense Intelligence Agency, participated in a talk at the Aspen Security Forum.

"Does Iran want war?" CNN's Jim Sciutto asked Ashley. "No," Ashley replied. The general said he believed Iran, Russia, and China do not want war because they all know the outcome would be "horrific for all." "I see Iran at an inflection point," Ashley said. The question for policymakers, he said, is how to get Iran to change the status quo. "Now you heard the economic breakdown, in terms of the pressure that's on the regime, where the GDP is going, the fact that they are going into recession, and the glide path that they are on is more of the same," Ashley said. What Iran has done to shake things up is to attempt to divide the U.S. and its European allies, he added.

Iran seized the first ship, the British-flagged Stena Impero, and the second, the Liberian-flagged MV Mesdar, within two hours of each other, according to reports and ship tracking data. Despite being Liberian-flagged, the Mesdar is owned by U.K.-based Norbulk Shipping. The Mesdar was released withing a couple hours. "This only goes to show what I'm saying about Iran. Trouble. Nothing but trouble," President Trump told reporters Friday afternoon. "It goes to show you I was right about Iran."

Iran threatened to seize a British ship in retaliation for the U.K.'s impounding of an Iranian oil tanker in Gibraltar earlier this month. The tanker was suspected of transporting oil to Syria, a key Iranian ally, in violation of European Union and U.S. sanctions. "I'm extremely concerned by the seizures of two naval vessels by Iranian authorities in the Strait of Hormuz," British Foreign Minister Jeremy Hunt said in a statement. Hunt confirmed there were no British citizens aboard the two ships and that the British ambassador in Tehran has contacted the Iranian foreign ministry "to resolve the situation."

James Comey’s 15 questions for Robert Mueller

Former FBI Director James Comey wrote 15 questions he would ask former special counsel Robert Mueller when he testifies to Congress next week. “If I were a member of Congress with five minutes to question Robert Mueller, I would ask short questions drawn from the report’s executive summaries,” Comey wrote in a piece for Lawfare on Friday.

Mueller is set to answer questions from the House Judiciary and Intelligence committees on Wednesday about his investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election and whether President Trump obstructed justice. Mueller was appointed special counsel in May 2017 after Trump fired Comey. He has been a vocal Trump critic ever since. Mueller concluded in his 448-page report there was insufficient evidence to establish the Trump campaign conspired with Russia to win the election, and did not make a determination on whether the president obstructed justice.

Comey’s questions include:

“Did you find that there were a series of contacts between the Trump campaign and individuals with ties to the Russian government?” “Did you find that the Trump foreign policy adviser said the Trump campaign had received indications from the Russian government that it could assist the campaign through the anonymous release of information damaging to candidate Clinton?” “Did you find that senior members of the Trump campaign met with Russian representatives at Trump Tower after being told in an email that the meeting was part of Russia and its government’s support for Mr. Trump?” “Did you find substantial evidence that the president had committed obstruction of justice crimes?”
