Where, if anywhere, does the quote, "if the American people knew what we have done, they would string us up from the lamp posts," by George H.W. Bush come from?

"That is a famous 1992 quote by George Herbert Walker Bush to Sarah McLendon, a Texas journalist who Bush had known for years and who was the grand dame of the White House press corps at the time. McLendon had asked Bush: 'What will the people do if they ever find out the truth about Iraq-gate and Iran contra?'"

The truth may have included, e.g., agreeing to supply the government of Iran with weapons if it would delay releasing U.S. hostages until after Reagan defeated Carter. Consistent with this interpretation, the hostages were released very shortly after Reagan's inauguration, and members of Reagan's administration did go on to supply Iran with weapons.
This information occurs all or mostly on radical left web sites. Ultimately, I don't know if the quote or these events really happened, but it seems plausible. If anyone has dug deeper on this, please give a better answer.
