Freemasonry's whole shtick is that they are a society of radical free-thought in a world that doesn't (or didn't) tolerate it. Nothing is shunned. This makes it an excellent recruiting pool where one can put forth somewhat risque ideas ("the serpent in the Guarden of Eden was the good guy", for example) and see who is receptive. If it goes over like a lead balloon then no harm done– you won't get burned at the stake. This is, I suspect, why Freemasonry is such a major nexus of all this shit. Most masons want to be good and are so, even though the whole operation is cursed.
