anon remembers a great story about a feared and successful commander who had never lost. in one battle he faced an opponent army camped across the river - though his forces were greater the commander waited - knowing his enemy would weaken with time - he was patient - but soon his generals became restless - he rebuffed them - repeatedly. soon the troops were restless - waiting so long, they said, was harder than battle and fatigue will set in - peak performance will diminish
but the commander would not relent - in many battles he had made difficult decisions, that had proven correct and true. he was confident of his own counsel - yet the generals still mumbled and the troops complained - all yearning for the battle. The commander took his own counsel and retired to his tents, as if he had all the time in the world and would order the attack when he and he alone deemed it ready. Weeks, then months, plodded on….
Then, one night the Commander had a dream - a dream of a glorious victory - and then he knew the time had come - he preened and smiled with the satisfaction of his coming success - and he emerged from his tent to at last issue the fateful order. He looked about with astonishment…
….all the troops of both armies were gone and he was alone - wailing in despair at the results of his own hubris
