George Washington was a member of the military version, while a British officer. According to records, he attended fewer than 10 meetings his entire life. The Richmond Lodge asked him to pose for a portrait, but he declined. The portrait of him with the apron was painted without him or his consent. The portrait of him laying the cornerstone of DC while wearing the apron was painted in the 1970's and is historically incorrect. Washington never posed for any portrait for masonry.

The majority of founders were NOT masons. Less than a handful were, but it's important to remember that masonry of their time was very different than the esoteric one that emerged later, during the mid-1800's. By the time this came to the U.S., the foundering generation was gone.

The masonry and founders meme is propaganda. That doesn't mean the esoteric changes in masonry are irrelevant.
