Trump met with Nunes and senior WH officials about replacing Dan Coats: Report

President Trump reportedly met last week with Rep. Devin Nunes, the top Republican on the House Intelligence Committee, about potential replacements for Director of National Intelligence Dan Coats. The 45-year-old California congressman met with Trump and top White House officials last week, according to Politico. The group discussed who could take over for Coats, 76, who has served in the role since 2017. The report added further fuel to recent speculation that the president is considering a new director of national intelligence.

Some names have surfaced as potential replacements, including Fred Fleitz, who served as chief of staff to national security adviser John Bolton. Trump reportedly discussed the possibility with Fleitz in February but didn’t officially offer him the job. Another potential candidate is Principal Deputy Director of National Intelligence Sue Gordon, a well-liked career intelligence official. There is also speculation among some on Capitol Hill that Nunes himself might be tapped for some sort of intelligence post.

“The president would certainly consider Devin Nunes for the director’s position and I eventually see him serving in some capacity in this administration,” a member of Congress close to Trump said, although he noted that Nunes is currently focused on his 2020 reelection bid. Coats stoked Trump’s ire after he appeared critical of the president’s relationship with Russian President Vladimir Putin during an interview last year. Despite that, Coats, a former Republican senator from Indiana, shares a close relationship with Vice President Mike Pence.

Trump, in 2015, raised prospect of Bill Clinton being ensnared by Jeffrey Epstein's sex crimes

Some of President Trump's enemies see his connection to sex criminal Jeffrey Epstein as having the potential to bring him down. But Trump himself publicly raised the Epstein case unprompted months before he announced his 2016 presidential run and identified another prominent figure as likely to become caught up in the scandal of sex with underage girls - former President Bill Clinton.

The recent arrest of Epstein on sex trafficking charges has brought fresh scrutiny of the disgraced financier’s black book of powerful friends, including presidents past and present. Trump has played down his ties, saying the two fell out some 15 years ago. In what could be an indication that he harbors no fears about being tainted by Epstein, in an often-overlooked interview in February 2015, Trump brought up the disgraced financier without being asked about him.

On stage at the Conservative Political Action Committee Conference he was asked by Sean Hannity, the Fox News host, for his thoughts on Bill Clinton. “Nice guy,” he said, before heading in an unexpected direction. "Got a lot of problems coming up, in my opinion, with the famous island with Jeffrey Epstein. Lot of problems.”

A month earlier, in January 2015, newspapers had been abuzz with the latest developments in a long-running lawsuit against him, in which a woman claimed she was loaned out to Epstein’s rich and powerful friends as an underage “sex slave”. Epstein has always denied the allegations. At the same time, the Trump-friendly National Enquirer published several stories about Epstein, including an interview with one of his accusers. Sam Nunberg, who was working for the Trump Organization, said he was called into Trump’s office one day, just before the CPAC appearance, as David Pecker, the then National Enquirer owner, was leaving. He had brought an issue of the magazine featuring a cover story about Prince Andrew and Epstein, according to Nunberg’s account.

They discussed the story, he said, and Trump told him that Pecker had photos of Clinton from Epstein’s island. He said this and the fact that Trump had brought up Epstein on stage at CPAC suggested President Trump had nothing to hide. “My position is that if the president was willing to talk to me, and go into detail about it, there was absolutely no illegal behavior,” he said.

Epstein, 66, denies charges he ran a sex trafficking operation and sexually abused dozens of underage girls in his New York and Florida homes between 2002 and 2005. He is being held in custody until his trial. His lawyers say he has a clean record since pleading guilty to prostitution charges in Florida in a 2008 plea deal.

In a statement released earlier this month, a spokesman said Clinton knew nothing about Epstein's "terrible crimes". "He’s not spoken to Epstein in well over a decade, and he has never been to Little St. James Island, Epstein’s ranch in New Mexico, or his residence in Florida," said the statement. But the Washington Examiner reported this month that Clinton had traveled on Epstein's "Lolita Express" private jet more times than he said and was not always accompanied by Secret Service agents. Trump has said that his past association with Epstein was limited: "I knew him like everybody in Palm Beach knew him. He was a fixture in Palm Beach. I don't think I have spoken to him in 15 years."

Trump, souring on John Bolton, meets one potential replacement and eyes another

President Trump's frustrations with national security adviser John Bolton are boiling over and he is considering removing his hawkish foreign policy aide, according to sources close to the White House. Several insiders said candidates to replace Bolton have already emerged, including retired Army Col. Douglas Macgregor and Ricky Waddell, assistant to the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. Macgregor recently spoke with Trump, but it’s unclear what they discussed, according to a source. “It’s certainly become clear to anyone who knows the way this president operates that Bolton’s time is coming to an end. It’s just unclear if he has a few more weeks or a few more months,” one former White House official told the Washington Examiner.

A second former White House official said they heard Trump is "fed up with Bolton.” A third said, "the president has seriously been considering other options.” A different former senior administration official said, “I’d be surprised if [Trump] doesn’t want Bolton to quit. That's kind of his MO.” Bolton’s aggressive approach to U.S. enemies has at times disconcerted the president, who regularly jokes that Bolton is hoping to enjoy a war somewhere. He frustrated Trump quarterbacking a failed uprising in Venezuela. Last week, Trump publicly disagreed with Bolton's long-sought goal of "regime change" in Iran and blessed dovish Sen. Rand Paul's request to act as an emissary.

Macgregor, an occasional Fox News guest, holds views close to Trump’s own. He has questioned the value of intervening in Afghanistan, Iraq, and Syria. He was a commander in the Gulf War tank battle for which former national security adviser H.R. McMaster won a Silver Star. Waddell, a former deputy national security adviser under McMaster, would be a more conventional pick. He’s seen as a favorite of Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, with whom Bolton has vied for leadership on foreign affairs. Neither Waddell nor Macgregor would comment.

One problem for Bolton is in-house tension with acting White House chief of staff Mick Mulvaney. The Washington Post reported this month that Bolton and Mulvaney are “barely on speaking terms” and that Mulvaney installed a deputy, Rob Blair, who "regularly battles" Bolton allies. A source who knows Mulvaney told the Washington Examiner on Thursday that "Mulvaney as of last week was interested in removing John Bolton from his job. That's true. That is not speculation." Mulvaney was confronted in his office after the Washington Examiner asked Bolton’s office to comment. “I have never spoken to anybody about John Bolton’s job,” Mulvaney said on the spot.

Emma Doyle, Mulvaney’s principal deputy chief of staff, confirmed the quote and said Mulvaney stood by it. Some insiders think Bolton is safe, at least for now. One well-connected former White House official said they "would be surprised" if Trump was actively interviewing candidates. Another person close to the White House, meanwhile, said they heard Trump is starting to talk to people about the job, but later came to believe Bolton is “not going anywhere” before the 2020 election. The White House did not supply an on-the-record comment, nor did Bolton’s office.

This doesn't surprise me one bit. Personally have never been a fan of Bolton, yes he probably served a purpose by repeating his old "neocon war monger" ways which just boxes him in all the more..so the purpose would be perhaps he's incriminated himself by just being him.

Lady of Maccabees

An interesting tidbit here from wiki..

The Knights of the Maccabees was founded in London, Ontario by members of the Order of the Foresters. They based their name, ceremonies and rituals on the Maccabees, a group of Jewish rebels against the Seleucid Empire whose exploits are described in the Books of the Maccabees, considered part of the Biblical canon by Catholics, but included in the Apocrypha by Protestants. The first convention was held on August 7, 1878

The group grew rapidly in Canada and several US States, reaching 10,000 members by 1880. The organization was not on an actuarially sound basis - no medical exams were required of new members, and assessments of death was 10 cents for each member. As death claims began piling up, the organizations expenses began to outweigh its income. A group of business men in Michigan, where the order had a number of members, endeavored to put the Maccabees on a sound financial basis. To this end a "grand review" was held in Buffalo, New York in 1880 to reorganize the society, drawing up a new constitution and laws. Major N. S. Boynton was elected the new Supreme Lieutenant Commander. This created a brief schism with the Canadian group seceding under a man named McLaughlin. In 1881 a meeting of the two factions representatives met at Port Huron, Michigan, and they agreed to reconcile their differences. A committee was appointed, chaired by Boynton, to draft a new constitution acceptable to both factions, and this was agreed to in February 1881.

Under the new constitution, Great Camps could be formed in states or provinces with more than 1,000 members and the Supreme Tent (overall organization) operated the beneficiary aspect of the organization. The Great Camp of Michigan was incorporated in that state on June 11, 1881, which was considered the foundation date of the reorganized order. Organizational stability remained elusive. At the Supreme Tent in July 1881 the Michigan delegates obtained an amendment to allow individual Great Camps to establish their own beneficiary programs, anticipating that the national organization would become defunct. By 1882, the order had indeed become dormant outside of Michigan, and Boynton became Great Record Keeper and then Great Commander of the state. The Supreme Tent was then revived, again, in September 1883.

In 1914 the organization changed its name from the Knights of the Maccabees to simply The Maccabees. In terms of finances and benefits, the Maccabees adopted the National Fraternal Congress Tables in 1911 and the American Mortuary Table of Rates in 1920. A "Supreme Review" conducted in 1958, the Macabees became a mutual life insurance company effective 1961, though still kept some fraternal features. Organizationally, the group suffered a split in 1905, when a group called the Western Bees seceded in 1905. This group eventually merged with the Highland Nobles in 1911. In the 1930s the Maccabees began absorbing some smaller fraternal benefit societies, including the Brotherhood of America in 1935, the Slavic Progressive Beneficial Union in 1937 and the Michigan Union Life Association in 1941.

By 1920 the ladies' auxiliary, Ladies of the Maccabees, claimed more than 200,000 members. In 1926 they established their headquarters at the Maccabees Building in downtown Detroit, Michigan. In 1960 the Maccabees relocated to a new building in Southfield, Michigan - a suburb of Detroit. In 1986 they built new 251,000-square-foot (23,300 m2) office building, in Southfield.

In 1941 the group gained control of the Michigan Union Life Association, furthering its transformation from a benefit society into a modern, legal-reserve insurance company. In 1962 the group changed its name again, this time to the Maccabees Mutual Life Insurance Company. In the 1990s the organization was demutualized and sold to the Royal Insurance Group and operated under the name Royal Maccabees Life Insurance Company. In 1999 Royal Maccabees was sold by its parent company, Royal & SunAlliance Financial Services, to Swiss Re. Swiss Re merged it into its subsidiary, Reassure America Life Insurance Company.
