James Comey: 'Millions of 2016 Trump voters are not racists' and should spurn him in 2020
Former FBI Director James Comey joined the chorus of critics lashing out at President Trump for his tweets venting at Rep. Elijah Cummings and calling the Democrat's Baltimore-based district a "disgusting, rat and rodent infested mess." In a tweet making an appeal to voters, Comey said, ''Millions of 2016 Trump voters are not racists. Now those Americans need the strength of character to resolve they will not again vote for someone who clearly is. It’s not about judges or taxes. It’s about who we are as a nation." In a trio of tweets Saturday morning, Trump called Cummings, a black congressman, a "brutal bully" and described his black-majority district as a "disgusting, rat and rodent infested mess" and "more dangerous" than the southern border.
Rallying to Cummings' defense, Democrats called Trump's tweets racist, including House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Sen. Elizabeth Warren, a 2020 candidate for president. Baltimore Mayor Bernard Young said Trump is "a disappointment to the people of Baltimore, our country, and to the world."
Cummings, who has represented the 7th Congressional District since 1996, defended his record of working for his constituents. "Mr. President, I go home to my district daily. Each morning, I wake up, and I go and fight for my neighbors. It is my constitutional duty to conduct oversight of the Executive Branch. But, it is my moral duty to fight for my constituents," Cummings said. "Just yesterday, I held a hearing on the skyrocketing prices of prescription drugs and the financial hardships that families across the nation, and in Baltimore, are facing," he added. "Mr. President, we can address this together. Two years ago, I went to the White House to ask you to endorse my bill to let the government negotiate directly for lower drug prices. You told me then that you supported the legislation and that you would work with me to make it happen. I took you at your word." An unrepentant Trump later escalated his feud with Cummings by tweeting a clip from a Fox News segment claiming that the House Oversight Committee chairman is abusing his congressional power of oversight.
