'Charity founded by socialite who "procured underage girls for Jeffrey Epstein" is investigated by FBI'

Ghislaine Maxwell, 57, is a British socialist whose father was late media mogul Robert Maxwell

She is alleged to have procured underage women for convicted pedophile Jeffrey Epstein

Maxwell is also the founder of The TerraMar Project, a now-defunct environmental charity

Federal investigators are looking into the charity's finances for a possible connection to Epstein, according to a media report in New York.

Federal authorities investigating wealthy sex offender Jeffrey Epstein are looking into a now-defunct charity that was run by a woman accused of ‘recruiting’ his alleged sex slaves.

The FBI is investigating links between Epstein and The TerraMar Project, a nonprofit that was funded by Ghislaine Maxwell, the New York Post is reporting on Saturday.

Maxwell, 57, is the daughter of late British media mogul Robert Maxwell.

She is a British socialite who moved to the United States after her father died in 1991.

In the U.S., she became a close associate of Epstein, the convicted sex offender.

Epstein and Maxwell have been photographed alongside powerful figures including Bill Clinton, Prince Andrew, Donald Trump, and others.

n 2012, she founded The TerraMar Project, a charity that claimed to work on behalf of cleaning up the environment.

But the Post reported that the group was funded solely by Maxwell, who pumped money into it after taking out hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of loans.

Documents list Maxwell as the president of TerraMar, whose official office was located at the same address as her home on the Upper East Side of Manhattan.

Between 2012 and 2017, Maxwell put in $283,429, the Post reported. During that same period, it gave out just $874 in grants.

One name listed on the board of directors is that of a woman who was allegedly flown on Epstein’s private jet to one of his homes in either New York, Palm Beach, or the Virgin Islands.

Epstein is alleged to have ferried young girls to and from his homes where he raped them.

The woman also lives in a three-bedroom home in Teaneck, New Jersey. Public records list Maxwell’s name as being connected to the home, according to the Post.

It is not known what the woman was doing on Epstein’s plane.

Law enforcement officials would not say why they are investigating the charity.

The charity board of directors also includes Ariadne Calvo-Platero, Maxwell’s best friend from Oxford; Dead Poets Society producer Steven Haft; and business Amir Dossal.

The charity’s web site has been shut down. The message on its reads: ‘The TerraMar Project is sad to announce that it will cease all operations. The web site will be closed.

‘TerraMar’s mission has always been to connect ocean lovers to positive actions, highlight science, and bring conscious change to how to people from across the globe can live, work and enjoy the ocean.

‘TerraMar wants to thank all its supporters, partners and fellow ocean lovers.’

Epstein, the financier facing charges of sex trafficking involving dozens of underage girls, was found unconscious in a Manhattan jail cell with injuries to his neck, media reported late on Wednesday, citing unidentified sources.

Epstein was found by guards sprawled on the floor of cell at the Metropolitan Correctional Center on Wednesday, media reported. Some media reported that his face appeared blue.

The billionaire financier was taken to hospital, the Post reported, but it was unclear where he was taken or what his condition was.

It was not clear how he suffered his injuries.

Neither a representative for the correctional center nor Epstein’s attorney returned calls or email inquiries from Reuters.

Epstein was recently denied bail, a move his lawyers plan to appeal according to a court notice made public on Tuesday.

Epstein was expected to ask the 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals to overturn the judge’s July 18 rejection of his request to remain under house arrest in his $77million mansion on Manhattan’s Upper East Side.

Epstein has pleaded not guilty to the charges and the appeal for bail was expected

His lawyer Reid Weingarten did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

A spokesman for U.S. Attorney Geoffrey Berman in Manhattan declined to comment.

The charges, concerning alleged misconduct from at least 2002 to 2005, were announced more than a decade after Epstein pleaded guilty to state prostitution charges in Florida.

In denying him bail, U.S. District Judge Richard Berman in Manhattan said the government had shown by clear and convincing evidence that Epstein would pose a danger to the community if released pending trial.

Maxwell has not been charged with a crime.

Jeffrey Epstein's ex-cop 'quadruple murderer' cellmate tells how he 'saved the billionaire pedophile's life when he found him unconscious following prison suicide attempt'

Metropolitan Correctional Center inmate Nicholas Tartaglione says he helped thwart Jeffrey Epstein's prison suicide last Tuesday night

Epstein reportedly tried to hang himself inside the high-security Manhattan jail

According to Tartaglione's lawyer, the two prisoners have struck up a friendship by bonding over the prison's deplorable conditions

Tartaglione is a former NYPD cop accused of killing four people over a botched drug deal back in 2016

Jeffrey Epstein's cellmate says he saved the billionaire pedophile's life during his recent suicide attempt inside Metropolitan Correctional Center in New York.

Nicholas Tartaglione - a former NYPD officer accused of killing four men over a drug deal gone wrong - claims he found Epstein unconscious on Tuesday night.

Epstein, 66, tried to hang himself before Tartaglione, 49, quickly called for help, according to The New York Daily News.

Investigators were initially trying to determine whether Tartaglione had assaulted Epstein or whether the billionaire financier had attempted to end his own life when he was found in his cell.

Epstein was rushed to hospital with neck injuries, while Tartaglione was questioned about Epstein's behavior and mental state in the hours before he was found on the floor.

However, Tartaglione's attorney Bruce Barket told DailyMail.com on Friday that the pair had struck up a close friendship following Epstein's arrest on July 6.

The twosome are in the same Special Housing Unit which is home to 99 inmates who pose a security risk or have violated disciplinary rules.

Muscle-bound Tartaglione is accused of murdering four men following a botched cocaine deal in December 2016.

Attorney General William Barr declared back in March that prosecutors would be seeking the death penalty over the callous crime.

Tartaglione is alleged to have lured his four victims to a bar in upstate New York, before he held them their against their will and killed them.

He reportedly shot three of the men in the backs of their heads.

Police say he was aided by another former New York City officer - Joseph Biggs, 57.

The pair allegedly drove the bodies to Tartaglione's farm about 30 minutes away and buried them in a wooded area.

Meanwhile, Tartaglione's attorney told DailyMail.com that his client had bonded with Epstein over the horrible conditions inside Metropolitan Correctional Center.

Barket said that the MCC was an 'inherently bad place' because the lights are on all the time and the frosted glass means no direct sun gets in.

The only time inmates can spend outside is the rare occasions they are allowed on the exercise yard on the roof - but that has a cage on the top.

He said: 'At times prisoners are kept for days in their cells because the guards are too lazy to let them out.

'The place is infested with insects and rodents and there is black mold in the shower. Most of the cells have leaks so there is standing water in many of them.

'The guards refuse to wash the bed linen so inmates have the same sheets for far too long. The food is barely edible and the vents are covered in dust.

'The medical care is virtually nonexistent. It's a small thing but even the clocks in the attorney visiting room don't have batteries because they don't replace them'

Barket said that the prison was a 'violent place' and that Tartaglione had recently been assaulted by another inmate who put his locker lock inside a sock and hit his head with it'.

The rodent infestation extends to the prison commissary where inmates can buy food and snacks - and the cells themselves.

Barket said: 'A week ago Nick woke up and realized he'd accidentally smothered a rat in his sleep. It's disgusting'.

Epstein is imprisoned at MCC after being charged with molesting girls at his homes in New York and West Palm Beach between 2002 and 2005.

He has pleaded not guilty to two charges of sex trafficking and is next due in court on Wednesday.
